So this is my first full day here at Mingles2. I am going to start a daily challenge and see how people react.
Todays' Challenge is: Say Hello to Five Complete Strangers. Then post here and let us all know how they reacted. I will do the same. :) |

Todays' Challenge is: Say Hello to Five Complete Strangers.
Then post here and let us all know how they reacted. I will do the same. :) This might be a challenge where you live but in the south here that is just what you do. I say "Hi" to over a dozen people while on my runs... Most just say "Hi" back and that is it but a few stop and talk for a few minutes. Good Luck on your challenge there though... |

It isn't about it being difficult or whatnot. It's about the physical act of going out of your way to acknowledge the existence of people that you don't know. :)

I just recently started a new job at Home Depot as a cashier so everyone is new to me. Yesterday I greeted and chatted with at least 30 people, today I barley left the house. Tomorrow I work so will be greeting and chatting all day again and so it goes.
Matt, I like your idea and welcome by the way! I am a naturally friendly and out going person so today's challenge is an easy one for me. Some people are very shy and might benefit from doing your challenge. I look forward to seeing what others you come up with! |

Okay, my update.
Person 1. Said hello on the bus this morning going into town. She politely smiled and went back to texting on her phone. Person 2. At the coffee shop I stop at. Gentleman said hello, asked me about my sweatshirt (it says Redstone Colorado on it) Person 3. Completely ignored Person 4. Completely ignored Person 5. At Jack in the Box for dinner. She sat across from me at the table because the place was packed. Polite conversation, followed by lack thereof. So what did I learn today. That 3/5 people will at least acknowledge that someone has said something to them. Good First experiment. Check back early tomorrow for the next Daily Challenge! |

I will do the same. :) aw mat. some of us have to do this in our job and I can tell you right now all of my 5-50 responses all said the same thing. I said "Hello" they said "hello" or maybe sometimes "Hi" that is the usual customary response. I am quite sure if saying it spontaneously out on the street the normal response would still be "hi", "hello"....given a non response would not be worth indicating on your survey being that it was a non response (but i am sure those not responding said "Hello" in their brain.) |

It isn't about it being difficult or whatnot. It's about the physical act of going out of your way to acknowledge the existence of people that you don't know. :) Hmmm ok, I live and work in a motel so this waw my day,. I talked and chatted to everyone who checked in. i ducked out shopping and chatted to the lady serving me and the people behind me, I chatted about my kids the day where I live and whatever else they asked me aboutas they where tourists . then I went for a swim and chatted to the people out in the pool yard, once again I talked about anything they wanted to hear. And about what they where up to in their lives. Walking around the back in to my place I stopped and chatted to the blokes sitting outside having a smoke, just talked about one whose wife had died recently and the other one was his son. Now I am sitting in the office talking to whoever wants to chat, and waiting for new people to come in. I have no idea how many people I didnt know that i talked to , but they where all interesting , all where friendly and happy to chat about everything. I rarely notice here in Australia anyone who isnt happy to share their lives and stories, occasionally we get tourists from overseas. who keep everything quiet but they are rare. But my job is to make everyone here feel welcome and enjoy their stay, , I will remeber things about their lives and family that they have told me so if they come back I can ask how they are. Its my job to be nice and to care, a lot of people who stay here are men working away from home and dont have family so they need to talk to someone, normally its me.. |
