I never understood why these words were taken as to promote the use of acid but then again I was like 5yo in 1969. My sis was 10 years older than me so maybe she could have shed a light on the subject. Her name was Diane. She passed away in 92'. We sang this song together, back then....

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff,And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. ohPuff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sailJackie kept a lookout perched on puff’s gigantic tail,Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came,Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.A dragon lives forever but not so little boysPainted wings and giant rings make way for other toys. One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no moreAnd puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar. His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,Puff, the magic dragon lived by the seaAnd frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

This is one of the most popular rumors dealing with songs. Peter Yarrow, who wrote the song, has said repeatedly that it was not, nor never will it be, about drugs. When the trio Peter, Paul, and Mary performed back in the 1960s and 1970s, to prove how ridiculous the rumors were, they would perform "The Star Spangled Banner", and stop to explain how each line could be a reference to drugs.

The song was based on a poem Yarrow's roommate in college wrote one day back in 1958. He came home after class, saw Peter's typewriter sitting out, and began typing out the poem, almost fluidly. The song is about losing the innocence of childhood, and nothing more. It is about how a young boy named Jackie Paper plays with an imaginary friend named Puff, who happens to be a dragon, and all the adventures they have. One day Jackie no longer shows up, because he's outgrown childish toys and things like imaginary friends.

There are several lyrics that would make it seem drug-related. "Jackie Paper" could refer to rolling papers. "Hanah Lee" could refer to the remote Hawaiian town of Hanalei, known for its marijuana plants. "Autumn mist" could refer to the marijuana smoke. "Puff the magic dragon" could be a reference to taking a hit (puff) on a joint, often referred to as a dragon.

I loved that song, and although I never heard of the acid reference,
I did hear when I was around 11-12 that it possibly alluded to pot
smoking. ohwell

>>ese>> Yeah, there are quite a few songs out there that they say are
about drugs and usage, makes ya wonder who are the ones that can
stretch to make a connection like that?

What a silver tongue.

We actually exchanged a few emails back when I registered a couple
years ago, but you were only on here and there, and I started talking
to one guy that became exclusive pretty quickly...another of those
"lessons learned". whoa

Maybe we should have kept emailing. I DO find you very beautiful, you make me dream a little bit every time I see your pictures and read your profile.

I learned something from being on this site about searching for that "special" someone. Perhaps an email now would be more appropriate, please do! I promise I'll answer you with respect and admiration... flowerforyou
