Topic: issues filling up car with gas | |
---|---|
so i have a 2005 subaru outback. the thing was fine in any other state when i put gas in the car. in texas tough, as i fill up the tank at the gas pump, the gas pump stops every couple seconds, just like it does when your tank is full. Its really obnoxious. i have to guess how many gallons to put into the car, and it takes about 10 minutes to put 12 gallons of gas into the thing. Does anyone have any idea what is going on, or what i can do about it? i know almost nothing about cars

it's a Subaru! Other than that, it usually comes down to a blocked/or faulty check valve in the fuel filler tube.

It's your evaporator vent solenoid . its either clogged or the vent is stuck closed .

It's not the EVAP vent. Common sense should say that since the hoses for the whole EVAP system are pretty thin (about 1/8-3/16" ID) and the amount of gas flow a normal gas pump puts out is MUCH greater than the volume of air the EVAP can displace. The filler neck has a vent just for that purpose and is 1- 1 1/2" ID. Think about it. The filler neck has valves in it to keep gas fumes from escaping and they have a habit of malfunctioning and not letting either gas in/air out of the tank.

There is a valve that hooks up to the Evaporator cannister that controls the air going to the gas tank breather tube on newer cars so i say it is this valve i have done many of these on blazers and jimmy's and Toyota's When the car is running it shuts off the air to the tank to purge the gas vapors in the manifold and when you turn off the car it opens to let you fill the tank up now when it's not working right you can not fill the gas tank up it will stop taking gas every few seconds . |

I know exactly how the EVAP system works. I've been working on cars professionally for 18 years and for almost as long as ASE Master Cert and my own shop. lol The purpose of the EVAP system is to prevent gas fumes from entering the atmosphere as well as keeping proper fuel bladder pressure and that's it. When the car is off the solenoid is closed and inactive, so would make no difference. If that valve doesn't open the way it's supposed to to keep pressure where it's supposed to the tank should vent when the gas cap is removed. The fresh air line is what's there for normal venting while the tank is being filled. |

And Now the fresh air vent is the is the Valve on the new cars so if its not working you still get the gas stoppage sure if the air vent is clogged or stuck closed you will not get gas either but 99% of the time it the canisters vent solenoid

thank you for your replies. so whichever of you is right, any idea what i'm looking at for cost? and another thing, why would it only start doing it once i got into the state of texas? it was fine on the drive down here and then right as i crossed into TX it started doing this. Could it just be a difference in gas pumps that set it over the edge? whatever it is, thank you again for your input
