I use stainless steel car antennas for weenie/marshmellow roasting. Cut
the ball off the end and thread the other end into a short piece of
broom handle.
They're almost as much fun as a cattle prod too!

Just make sure they're solid, not the telescoping type. The telescoping
one tend to droop when they overheat. Nobody wants their weenie in the
fire! laugh

Blue Ridge can be pretty rocky. I sometimes take a small hammock with me
camping there. I've also wimped out and taken a mattress and tent.

At least you won't be forced into a campground!

Choose high ground with some trees for wind protection.
Put a tarp down under the tent.
Take a small shovel along. Dig a small trench around the tent and outlet
it to the lowest side. It will keep you dry when it rains by running
water around you.
Build your fire to the down wind of your tent. The Westerly winds will
not blow smoke into the tent that way. Make a ring of rocks around the
campfire to keep the fire contained.

Store all food in a tree or in your truck away from your tent!! Keeps
Bears away from you and busy at the tree instead of the tent!!

care...

There is nothing like being in the woods, I hope you have a GREAT
time...I read through everyone's suggestions, and the ONLY thing that's
not down...is one of those camping chairs. Make sure you get one...where
you can put your beer can in. Let us know how it went...when you get
back.
