So you would rather be wrong and not in the majority for the sake of calling yourself courageous........ Who said that the majority is always right? Observation About Life #87: Truth is not determined by a majority vote. |

I'm not sure about this one Judy.
It's all too "popular" to identify yourself as a Maverick. I've spent most of my life going against the grain and done so surrounded by chosen like minds. So would I be lying if I said I didn't want to somehow "belong"? It is only when I step outside of "this" box when I can consider myself an independent thinker.(Lucky to have friends I disagree with all of the time) It's ironic how only when I fess up to liking something popular...saying "Yeah I AGREE with the majority here. I think that's cool." am I a TRUE rebel. (Stepping out of the majority of MY OWN circle). Two quotes - -(my sister of my niece) "I hope she doesn't become Goth, so she can be "an individual." -(Billy Joe of Green Day) "At that point, writing a ballad was the most PUNK thing we could do." |

If I said that I agreed with the majority, would that be unpopular?

I don't think Twain is saying it's wrong to agree with majority opinion, just that your premise for doing so should be closely examined to make sure you're coming from the right place and not just following the crowd.
Agree for the merits of the cause, as it relates to your individual opinion, not just because the majority supports the cause. |

I've been an nonconformist all my life... not because I don't wanna "run with the pack" but because I choose to think things out for myself and not be spoon-fed "facts" by others... that I'm often in the minority is just the way the dice seem to shake-out. idk. I'm comfortable with myself regardless...

People should always think for themselves and never make an opinion based upon opinions from everyone else.

If I said that I agreed with the majority, would that be unpopular? Well I think MT was a bit before his time. Because NOW being minority is the 'cool' and everyone is 'down' with that, so it becomes the majority. And being a rebel JUST for the sake of being one, which I used to be, doesn't jive either. I think if you are an INDEPENDENT thinker, well then .. THAT is what MT speaks of. Not letting your opinion be tweaked by ANYONE .. but holding to your own eh? |
