Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A 9-year-old boy fatally shot his 2-year-old brother while playing with a gun in Los Angeles, authorities said late Saturday.

The boy found the gun in his house, said Sgt. Tim Walters of the Los Angeles Police Department. While playing with it, he accidentally shot the toddler, Walters said.

No charges will be filed, according to Walters.

Police said they responded to a call Friday and found the toddler suffering from a single gunshot wound to the torso. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he died later that night.

"Homicide detectives interviewed family members and determined that the gun had gone off while the 9-year-old was playing with it," police said in a statement.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, authorities said.

Techically it wasn't the gun's fault. We should ban children, they're the ones causing all the problems.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) approximately 3.5 million deaths each year are attributable to diarrhea. 80% of those deaths occur in children under the age of 5 years. Children are more susceptible to the complications of diarrhea because a smaller amount of fluid loss leads to dehydration, compared to adults.

80%=2.8 million.

Lack of clean water and sanitation.

I dont get it really. I think , people should be able to have guns to protect themself BUT they should have the guns out of the way of children and unloaded

BUT if its out of the way and unloaded, what are the chances they will get to it in time if they have to protect themself

I am totally against teaching children about guns or even putting them in in a childs hands,,, but every parent has to decide what works best in their family

it is always sad to hear about a family losing a child,,especially something so easily preventable...

IMO they need to charge the parents. Maybe if enough charges are pressed against parents not securing guns or watching their kids, then maybe some parents would wake up.

perhaps there is supposed to be an analogy of how anything can be deemed dangerous, or how there are everyday things more dangerous than guns ???

Sad and tragic that MILLIONS of children die from lack of very basic necessities, which we in this country take for granted.

That one child dies from the parents stupidity is tragic, and usually is followed by the clamor to 'do something' about kids and guns.

Where is the outcry, the rallies, vigils, proposed legislation, etc. for the MILLIONS of children that die from diarrhea?

If I owned a gun and had kids in the house I would get the lock thing that looks like a strap when you take the clip out it slides through where the clip comes out of through the chamber and around to the base and locks.

Diarrhea doesn't look as good on a handout.

BTW as a student nurse I took care of a small child that had shot himself with the Dad's gun, he was a cop.

The Dad was devastated, the child actually did quite well and recovered.

I've said for years, the government could get people to buy bags o' poo, if it was sold "FOR THE CHILDREN".

That's how they got all the new taxes on tobacco passed. Did you know that, now, everytime someone smokes a cig, they're supporting healthcare for poor children? How does that even work in someone's head?

This just proves what the anti-gun crowd has been crowing about for all these years ... those damned guns are EEEEEEEEEE-vul ... y' gotta watch 'em like a hawk, or, before y' know it, they're gonna take it into their head that they've just had enough and they're gonna go off and take out their metallic anger on us 'flesh puppets' ... Why, oh why, didn't we have the sheer common sense to listen when Handgun Control spoke ... ? It IS the 'rise of the machines' ... be afwaid ... be VEWY afwaid ...

Diarrhea doesn't look as good on a handout.

also, diarrhea is treatable, a fatal gunshot is not
also, the numbers are quite different in AMERICA, where children dying from diarrhea are in the hundreds yearly compared to the thousands who die as a result of a gun in the wrong hands,,,,

people often dont get up in arms about things until they are happening in their own back yard,, diarrhea is a problem with unsanitary water in most instances which isnt actually something that is a huge issue in the states,,, unlike the relative ease with which children get their hands on guns
