Topic: BroadcasterLegend. Ernie Harwell dies at age 92 | |

I am not a man that cries a whole lot.
But tonight, I post with tears in my eyes. Ernie Harwell, Detroit Tigers radio broadcaster for 42 years, died today at the age of 92. A few months ago, it was announced that Ernie had inoperable cancer of the bile ducts. Today, it took his life. It may seem silly to some for a grown man to cry over a baseball announcer. For those of you who may think so, then you didn't grow up listening to Ernie. I don't have very many good memories from my childhood. But one of the very best memories I DO have is this. I would always get shipped to my Aunt's house for the Summer as soon as school let out. Once a week or so, we would get in the car and make a short cross town trip to see her ex husband. I always, ALWAYS looked forward to those days because I knew my Uncle Delmer would be listening to the Tigers on the radio. So, every time, I would go and sit with him and listen to Ernie Harwell's voice while he( my uncle ) taught me how to keep score. It may seem like such a small thing to many. But to me, it was one of the few things I had to look forward to. Ernie was, although a disembodied voice on the radio, a big part of one of the few good memories I have. So it's with a smile, and a heavy heart, that I post these words... Ernie Harwell, broadcaster, legend, has passed away. God bless you, Ernie. |

R.I.P. Ernie, from a life long Tigers fan. I was born in Florida but grew up and got into sports while living in Pontiac, Michigan, so I love all of the Detroit teams, even after moving away from Michigan. Thanks for posting this, I used to love listening to him on Tigers broadcasts as a kid.

WJR AM 760. Ernie was a legend. I used to be a Tigers fan for many years and listened to the games in Detroit on the radio, and even when I lived in Syracuse, NY. My dad put a super-antenna in the backyard and I could still pick-up WJR Detroit even in Syracuse, and I listened to so many Tigers games with Ernie broadcasting. He was a great man, and he will be missed. Rest In Peace, Ernie.

Awwwww, I am so sorry that happened. Think of it this way, he may be gone, but the memory remains. He's probably up there on a big radio mic in the sky chatting away about the Tigers.
How could that ever seem silly to cry? He was a part of your childhood and one of the only good memories you have of that time. Crying is good sometimes and cherishing the memory is even better. I am sure Ernie Harwell would have appreciated his spirit being honored by fans sharing fond memories such as yours Tim. |

It's so sad to hear that he passed
I remember listening to Ernie on WJR when I was a kid, growing up in MI. I was never a baseball fan, but my Grandpa was and we always listened to Ernie. Oh the memories. You are truly a legend. Rest in peace Ernie. |

One of the greatest things about Ernie is that he never thought he deserved the kind of reverence and esteem people held him in. He was much too humble a man to bask in glory. Rest In Peace, Ernie. Millions of fans are mourning your passing. |
