I liken it to joining any regularly meeting social group. You walk in, find a seat, look around, listen to the conversations, join in as appropriate. As a new person, not so loud but not meek. It is OK to mention you are new around here. After a while people become aware of you and say "Hi, how ya doin' " when you come in. Pretty soon you are one of the regulars and you belong.

Post often, Chat Global-Date Local.
An interesting profile with a couple of pics helps a lot.
Spelling counts-grammar not so much.

If there is someone that interests you, try to join them in conversation in one of the topic forums. If they aren't one of the forum regulars, be polite in those first emails, don't bring up sex too quickly, be sure you've read their profile.
