I gave up sugar in coffee i'm now using splenda

I have to use splenda

Getting use to it , not too bad
Did you see the new splenda w fiber?

Oddly enough...I work in the sugar ( the REAL stuff ) industry.

I can't recommend Splenda or Equal or any other chemical sweetener.

J.A.G., what's your excercise level like? Do you jog, bicycle, work out, etc? How often? You have to take that into account as much as your diet too. The soda, would you drink caffeine free soda or diet soda? If not have you considered tea, or juice? Just some ideas I had for you. I know how hard it is to give up something you love.

Ok. Answers...in order...lol

My exercise was not very high over the Winter. Now that Spring is here ( or will be shortly ) it will go up because I play golf once a week and will be riding my bike to work rather than driving. One thing that really didn't help my cause is that I am a forklift driver and don't get much movement during the time I am at work.

No caffeine free or diet soda. Regular Mountain Dew. Can't get past the aftertaste of diet sodas.

To replace the soda, I have been drinking a combination of water, orange juice and iced tea over the last couple of days.

It'll take a few days for my system to clear out, but I know I'll be better off for it.

I am not all that worried about my caloric intake because I really don't eat all that much and I try to eat relatively healthy stuff. It was more a matter of the fact that I was drinking a LOT of soda every day.

Not to mention, I had to pick one vice to give up. Smoking or soda. I chose soda because I will most likely wind up losing weight. That means I'll be able to afford a few pounds when I try to give up smoking.

I just knew I couldn't do both at the same time.

Sounds good to me, J.A.G. you have the plan. Now stick to it. It's only been a few days, but you have seemed to have thought this through. Excercise and hydration will be key though, keep that in mind. I hope the soda boycott works for you.

watch "super-size me", the movie.......i was able to quit sodas in one day, and never crave another after that. he poured thirty pounds of sugar on the table, and said, that's what he drank for the month.....i drank double gulps from 7 eleven twice a day.....more than he did! i was headed for diabetes if i didn't quit....fast!

Funny you brought that up. I saw a commercial and this guy was comparing a glass of lard to a glass of soda showing how much fat you would actually be drinking onto yourself from all that sugar! It was unreal. flowerforyou Now, I just treat myself here & there.

Izze natural carbonated juice is an awesome alternative. no added sugar at all.... the pomegranite is the least sweet, and has an awesome bouquet.....dry, almost like wine, but doesn't taste like wine.....more fruity.

or, get a juicer like i've got. juiceman JR is the best. a hardy machine, and time tested. most valuable purchase i've ever made.

my eyesight went from 20/40 to 20/10, and my strength went up 25% naturally.

That brand isn't sold around here.

I've considered getting a juicer. I just don't know if I would use it enough to justify the cost.

Thanks, Cats.

One thing that I have been looking at recently is the fact that almost every male in my family ( on both sides ) have had heart problems after the age of 45. Two of my Uncles died before they turned 50 and my Dad had a heart attack recently.

I am a firm believer in " enjoy yourself while you're here " but....well..ya know how it is. lol

Fortunately, I have no trace of diabetes or high blood pressure at this point. So I am just gonna do what I can to keep it that way.

you can find them at any natural food stores, or even walmart or i've seen them at grocery stores lately. your store will order them if you request them, most likely.....worth a try!

it will save your life, and make you strong. the main complaint is cleaning it. if you clean it before you drink your juice, and do this as a regiment, you'll appreciate the power of the fast-track to health it gives you. if not, you'll live as you are, with much less gusto and energy. everyone i've gotten a juicer for, has improved dramatically.

the reason people don't do something, is because the pain of doing it exceeds the pain of not doing it. when that pain of procratination is greater, things will move. it's that simple.

anytime you need me, i'll answer anything i can for you, sincerely, Vincent~

Thanks, Vincent. I definitely appreciate the offer.drinker

I think one of the main problems I have with justifying the expense is that, other than fruit juices, I'm not really fond of other juices.

Especially vegetable juices. lol

If I want carrot juice, I'll just eat the carrot...lmao

Oh I have DEFINITELY run across the withdrawals.

Friday was almost pure HELL because I didn't drink any soda at all. I went golfing that day and I usually had a soda while I was out on the course.

Just like smoking, the hardest thing about cutting out soda is breaking the habit of having one while you are doing the things you've always done while drinking one.

I put more & more sugar in my coffee while in the Army because it was so bad that one day I put so much in that I quit using it all together.I rarely drink soda but one day I poured some diet Coke on an ant hill & instead of eating it the ants buried it.My friend poured regular soda on the hill & they gobbled it up.That was proof rnough for me that artifical sweeteners aren't good.

You are actually worse off using a sugar substitute because it's chemically altered and not natural in any way.

Thank you. Those artificial sugars do more harm then good.If you are going to have pop? Have a regular one. Or you can buy 6oz ones if you have to have one.

There are other things like caffeine and that is what is messing with you. There really is an addiction problem with caffeine. Look it up.

Ummm...look at the first post again and you'll see that I did mention the caffeine in the soda.

I used to drink Mountain Dew, so I had the caffeine/sugar double whammy to give up.

I got lucky when I quit the Dew. I went from 8-10 cans a day to none overnight. The heart surgery shocked my system, so I didn't even deal with withdrawals. I will on occassion drink one can but I'm pretty much done with it.

I do black or the fruit and herbal teas, hot and iced, now. Though I can't stand the taste of green.

I'm like you, though, with the winter weight gain. I'm happy that my boss will shift me back to 3 days off, since I can get back out and bust butt getting stuff done, and lose the weight again for spring, summer, fall. Things to do! Yay!

I tried the Green Tea and just about died. Don't like it at all.sick

I have been sticking with Lipton Instant which tastes pretty good. I have never been one for putting sugar into my tea anyway so I didn't have that particular habit to break.

As soon as the weather hits 50 degrees consistently I'll be getting a new bike. I'll also be walking the golf course instead of riding the cart once the weather gets nicer and the courses dry out a bit more.
