Colorado Springs... Because of the natural springs.
There are no springs here. Palmer gave it that name in hopes of drawing people to the area.

Palmer name Colorado Springs because of the proximity to the Natural Springs In Manitou Springs. Check out the Pioneer Museum. Read Palmer's writings, He also nickname it Little London. Because of all the English tourist that came to Colorado Springs.

Canton, Ohio (Home of The Pro Football Hall Of Fame)

Was once known as "Little Chicago" back in the 20`s and 30`s. The gangsters from back then would come to Canton to chill out while the heat was on in Chicago.

Sugarloaf because it is at the base of Sugarloaf mountain which, presumably, is shaped like a loaf of bread and in the winter, when covered with snow, looks like God sprinkled powdered sugar on it. This winter God sprinkled a buttload of sugar on it and everything else.

Colorado Springs... Because of the natural springs.

Spent 3 years there in the Springs, back in the early 80's!

Still consider it a second home, even with all that snow!

All what snow? We haven't had real snow here since December of 2007. It's been a disappointing winter so far.

Not sure about Thornton, but the day I left the Springs...it rained, sleeted, snowed, and sunshine all within 10 minutes, while I was using a phone booth!

So, there is truth in what they say there..."If you don't like the weather...just wait 5 minutes, it'll change"!

I thought the weather was a bit nutty out there in CO. Last time I was there, there was crazy lightening, sunshine, hail, sunshine.. all in about 10 minutes.

Well, anybody that knows me, can tell you just how much I hate snow!

But Colorado Springs has a kind of magic to it(or it did with me)!

I put up with the cold Chinook winds, and the snow for 3 years, and never regretted it!

Then decided to come back home to Alabama!

I still consider the Springs like a second home.

Colorado is a state that you have to see, and experience, in order to fully appreciate! No post card, or explaining it will do it justice!

drinker biggrin

I thought Colorado was great. Well, at least the Denver area, as that's where I visited twice last year.

Yea...if your back in Denver...it would be worth your time/effort to travel about 60-70 miles south, to the Springs! Guarantee you'll love it!

I think, back in the early 80's, when I was there...it was said that you could go to a different restaurant every night for a year, and never go the the same one twice! I couldn't imagine what they're saying now in 2010 (20+ years later)!

I also think the America The Beautiful was written from the Springs, atop Pikes Peak Mountain!

Husdon, OH...where I grew up was named after it's founder David Hudson.
Walla Walla, WA...where I resided for 30 years...Walla Walla is a Native American name that means "Place of Many Waters." Locals refer to Walla Walla as, 'The Town so nice they named it twice'.
Albuquerque, NM...where I now live...the word Alburquerque may be rooted in the Arabic (Moorish) 'Abu al-Qurq', which means "father of the cork oak", or "land of the cork oak" (the land as father – fatherland).

Where Yellville now stands or a part of it at least, was once occupied by an Indian village called Shawnee town, while this village was being evacuated by the red men the white men took Possession of it which began about the year 1832. Productive farms and prosperous people are found all around this little north Arkansas city. Yellville was named for Colonel Archibald Yell, a soldier who commanded an Arkansas regiment of gallant men in the war with Mexico; and was slain by a Mexican lancer in the hard fought battle of Bunavista while so nobley defending the rights of his country.
