Hi, I belong here too... here's my story with my son. My late hubby & I were foster parents for 28 yrs . My son came to us at 14 months we adopted him when he was 4. He is FAS ( fetal alcohol syndrome)& borderline autisic& Cognitively delayed. He is now 17 & a joy!
I was worried about how the move would affect him but he has done great.the school here is great too.
Hugs to you other moms here, its hard enough to be a mom but a single mom should have a medal.

UPDATE****

My son had a check up at the Mayo Clinic in July and received EXCELLENT NEWS!

He is said: -No longer @ risk for Cerebalpalsy!

and his Hydrocephlysis is finally on the mend......No brain surgery needed!

My biggest concern is keeping him from climbing the walls!

hello everyone, I am happy to find y'all...
I have three special needs children, my son Killian(8) has Aspergers, bipolar (rapid cycle/mainly manic), ODD, OCD, ADHD, Sensory Integrative disorder, as well as a host of physical health issues; my 6 year old son Zane has ASD (autism spectrun disorder) was born 10 weeks premature and has had a host of interventions over the years...he also has ADHD, ODD,Conduct Disorder, Sensory Integrative Disorder, speech problems, and a few other challenges; my daughter, Ayiana (age 5) has ADHD and behavior disorder...but many of her issues stem from being around her behavior-challenged brothers!! She was also born very premature..in fact I never had a 9 month pregnancy with any of mine, the longest I ever went was 33 weeks!!
My oldest is homeschooled as the school system in my city is not well prepared to help him...he has an IQ of 156, yet has such problems in anormal school setting!! He has finally gotten accepted into a local after school program run by autsim specialists and students...its sooooo cool!!
Anyway, as a single mom, life can be challenging with special needs kids, although I simply love 'em to death, but it is really nice to have a place to come to where people dont think you are crazy when the kids are out of control...nice to meet you all, I will be baaaacK!!!
:)

Hello everyone... well Noah had his surgery a month ago to fix his two holes in his heart. It was one of the roughest times I've had to go through with him, but he is doing very well. The worst part was expecting a child to hold still for hours, so he was sedated for most of the day because he would not hold still. Anyway I'm so relieved to be able to say it is done and over with and in another four weeks we go back to see how things are going. Today he is back to his normal routine of seeing all his therapists in house. I think the hard part is trying to keep the house clean when you have three teenaged boys who seem to forget to clean up after themselves.

Well I am not a parent, so this probably doesn't count, but i have a little sister with another form of high-functioning autism, and I love her very much! She is also my inspiration for my study in early childhood (and special needs) education.

i211986e...my kids have been my inspiration to complete my ADN, BSN, MSNEd, and now i am working on my PhD...seeing them work so hard to achieve stuff made me realize that i could do better for them...much of the research I am doing now revolves around my childrens diagnoses and expected life quality....so I appluad you, gofer it :)

Thanks for the welcome Twilights Twin, I am guessing that God knows what I can handle even if I dont!!

Hi Twilight.

Glad to hear your son is doing so well. My parents oldest son died because they didn't catch it in time. He was 25 months old. If only it had been easier back in 1947, he would still be here. He would've been 60 years old on the 21st of this month.

I also have a daughter with learning disabilities who was diagnosed as mildly retarded, but to me she is very smart. These children are a blessing to us, and I hope we can all remember that. Sometimes it can get hard. Like my niece, she has son that is 4 years old and has Autism, he just said his name this week at school. He can count to ten and is really trying to talk more now. Such a precious little blonde haired blue eyed boy. Take care. We should keep this forum open more often.

Hey winnieflowerforyou

Glad to know you found someone who is good for your son. Let us know if she does call you and if you do get to work with her. It could really help some parents here on JSH also at their wits end.

Hey fun_in_scflowerforyou

It really is amazing how far pediatrics have advanced in recent years. Before I left the NICU @ the Mayo a little baby boy was born at 23 weeks! Weighing only 14oz!

I thought 11 1/2 weeks was uber early!

Our children are absolute blessings and amazingly smart. Their little bodies are facinating how they learn to cope, re-wire, and adapt through their struggles.

My son's little friend is autistic. It is amazing when he comes over he can play the same note on the piano that i just played without showing him where, and he is only 3!

Darlings...

School year is staring out without too much drama! Thank goodness and knock wood. D is learning to handle his frustrations. More tests to come in December when he is turns 7. Still fighting the ADD diagnosis. I just don't see it. My gut is CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder).

Either way we are keeping busy with school and tae kwon do three days a week. I kept D out of Hebrew school on Sunday mornings since that would be keeping him busy 7 days a week. If he falls behind, I can teach him his Alef-Bets. He is only in first grade for goodness sake.

Hope everyone else is well and enjoying their weekend. Anyone needs me or an ear or a shoulder to lean on, just holler (or email me).

Hugs, M
