Take apart a cheapy DVD burner to "liberate" the laser-diode that you can power with plain old batteries. It will be hot enough to pop balloons, and irritate your friends hands (wont do much else though). http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2007/06/how_to_make_a_laser_more.html
