Topic: Choosing Our Battles | |

There is a saying.."Would you rather be right or happy?" From raising 3 boys alone I can say that guys brains are very different. I have always had a thing about pulling the shower curtain open and draping the rug over the side of the tub after a shower. I have taught this to all of my boys...adamantly at times, making them go back into the bathroom to do this. My 18 year old son has never grasped this..he never does it, and never has. I have been told by others offering their advise.."make him do it, he has to learn". Well a couple years ago I just gave up, I go in after him and just do it. He is a great kid, honor roll student, home at night, does dishes, still kisses me hello and good bye. His brain just does not compute on why these 2 things need to be done.. He is not intentionally doing this to piss me off, and so when I finally realized that, I let the battle go. It matters not and it is one less small thing to worry about. After all this time, all the good things about him are more important than the shower curtain and rug....do we sometimes hold onto some silly battle just to prove a point, or just to win? |

Funny that is a more of a pet peeve to me then putting the toilet seat down and my son is 27 now and still have not got it through to him. I gave up on that long time ago and decided to just go in and do it myself instead. He has always been there when I needed him. My daughter just bought a house on her own at 25 my son has done a bit of everything and not much he has not learned to do. He has been there every day helping his sister to do minor repairs ect so she want have to pay a contractor. Just to know I have raised 2 kids that are loving and is willing to help out when needed and not expect anything in return is worth it all to me.
Think I can deal with my pet peeves for I guarantee when they get out on their own you will find out they have actually took more to heart then we think..... |

i agree with what you said but everyone knows you have to keep the shower curtain closed and hang the rug over the curtain rod that way both of them dry and cuts down on mold on the shower curtain as well.

Sorry, I am hard headed.
Can't follow my rules in my house, can't shower here. My son agrees with this NOW, when he was young we had issues. Now he tells his children same thing I told him. "Do it, or you WILL regret it." Never beat him, lots of ways to get people's attention & making them WANT to remember. |

Lori, your post made me laugh because with my 18yr old son it is the bath mat in the tub. I tried relentlessly to get him to take it out of the tub when he is done. On rare occaisions it actually happens but they are few and far between. Like you I gave up and just do it myself. I don't think he does it to make me mad either, he just doesn't feel it is important. When he does happen to do it, I feel like I just won a victory!!!
I just know that someday when he is married and I go to visit him I am going to leave the mat in the shower and let his wife complain to him about his mother never hanging up the mat! His wife nagging at him will have a stronger effect than my nagging now and hopefully he will remember my pleas when he was a teenager |

I ask myself is it gonna matter in a wk from now, a month, year? I'm pretty laid back and most people don't like being told what to do, even if it is from a parent. My assistant drives me crazy like that- does what he wants instead of what he should. The difference being it's work and we need things to roll- esp during crucial moments. I ask him whats the problem and then he sees what the goal is. A little hard headed but a good guy. If it's gonna matter in the future...then we need to get on the same page and do it by talking til everyone is heard.

I figure he will have a place and when the rug and curtain get mold he will think...hummm that's why mom always wanted me to do that.. |
