If a player is in a red shirt status for the year 2009, can he keep his four years of eligibility and play in a January 2010 bowl game?

"Red shirt" status is when a player in a member of the team, but does not play in any games that year, and keep all four years of eligibility.

I don't think so - wouldn't it be the 'season' - not the year? So if he's red shirted for 09-10 season and doesn't play, he still have the 4 years.

Is a bowl game considered to be in the "season"?

I think so

a redshirt freshman is sometimes a transfer student and the "redshirt" year doesn't count towards his NCAA eligibility

as opposed to a "true" freshman

EDIT: come to think of it, its the scholastic term so prolly Fall/Spring of 2009/2010

Bummer. Boise State has a red shirt that I was hoping could play in the Fiesta bowl.

nope.a red shirt player has to sit out the complete season, including bowl/championship games
