Topic: How were you Babtised? | |

"Do you think water is necessary if one is babtised by the Holy Spirit?"
Not to be saved, but Jesus has asked Christians to be Baptised, so we should do it to please our Lord. |

By immersion into the Mormon church at the age of 8, against my wishes &
my Grandmother's as well. It was a horrid experience. I later, as an adult, requested they excommunicate me. Which they did. I never considered forcing my beliefs on my children. Peace, love & wisdom |

When I had my kids, my sister and I got into a horrible row. I did not
plan on baptizing my kids - their father preferred to leave that decision up to me, so that's what I chose. My sister's argument was how would God know they were here. My response was if they are sent from God, how can he not know. So first off, can anybody explain the purpose of baptism - in a nutshell if possible, please. |

Differentkindofwench,
Circumcision is simply this: Cutting flesh off the part of a man that they hold most dear. The spiritual message was that God must cut the sin away from the person. Baptism by John The Baptist was an indication that your sins must be washed away by God. Baptism since Jesus died on the cross represents death to sin and resurrection into a new life. Baptism to most Christians is an outward sin of an inward commitment. |

Spide in that last line did you mean sign rather than sin?
|
|
|

Differentkindofwench,
Yes, "sign". |

Okay, thanks for the nutshell.

Now that I know the purpose of Baptism, I can answer this last part of
the post. I'm thinkin' that since God is the only one who can judge and see our true belief, my kids are still safe picking what works best for each of them. So no, I don't think the ritual is important. |

Differentkindofwench,
There is no work that any of us can do to to aid in our own salvation, so you are correct. We cannot be saved through water baptism or circumcision or any other work that we might do. |
|
|
|
Actually Spider, I believe the work that we do can lead to the
salvation. I believe if we work on ourselves to be better people and evolve to our full potential - God just might have something to give a thumbs up on when its time for judgement. |

I like that point of view DKW.
In Islam baptisim is either a washing or full body imersion in a river. It must be done upon entering the faith and each time one of the faith has had intercourse. |

Well that could explain all the wars over there then wouldn't it.

I'm not sure but I reckon some people would be needing to be baptised
quite often. |

If water baptism is not the will of the Holy Spirit. Then why did Peter
go to Cornilious at the end of Acts 10? Shalom.... Miles |

I got snipped and dipped shortly after birth.
I don't remember being consulted in this matter. |

Neither am I, it's just the way it's done in many religions.
I think it is a way to make up numbers sometimes. |

Last time I was baptised we broke a hole in the ice at the crick
(creek). First time I was baptised I went in a dry sinner and came up a wet hypocrite. |

I was baptised when i was a couple of weeks old by the catholic church.

invisible,
Actually, many people believe that Baptism helps or is required for salvation. They aren't doing it to boost their numbers, it is a misguided (in my opinion) attempt to save souls. Mother Thersa used to minister to the dying and she would always ask them if she could have them Baptised into the Catholic Church. These were people on their death beds, so there was no chance of them tithing or showing up for services. |

I see a slight difference there because as a baby a couple of weeks old
you won't have much choice. but the churches prefer to do it this way in the hope that you just stick with them once you have a choice. |
