Topic: Any car mechanics on here... | |
---|---|
I need a little advice, I have a 2001 Suzuki Vitara, it has about 89,000 miles, has been a great car. However I think I need new shocks, how can I be sure the mechanic isn't just agreeing with me because that's what I told him I think I need, I just think it is running rough and I just got new tires. He said yes, I do need them, they have never been done, what do you all think?

I'm a mechanic & yes you are due for shocks/struts at that mileage.

Oh thanks, that makes me feel much better...

I was going to let him just do the fronts first, but now that you said that maybe I should just get them all done and be done with it.

You may have to replace your exhaust bearings or carburetor belt too...
Which is an extra $400,but you really need to get it done. |

You may have to replace your exhaust bearings or carburetor belt too... Well this can wait a little, right? |

They say that shocks/struts are good for about 40,000 miles depending on driving conditions.

OMG, I can't afford all this...so this part will have to wait, he is charging me 700.00 for the shocks (all 4)

pat is for sure correct going on your milage..but another test is push down hard on a corner of your car and see if it takes more than a bounce and half to stop. if it does they are worn..

How does the car ride?
Does it bounce up and down more than usual? Does the body roll a lot when you turn? What does running rough mean? Rough ride? Or engine running poorly? If you feel it has a rough ride now. New shocks are going to make it feel rougher. |

New or different tires may feel harder than the old ones.
Shocks control bounce, new ones will not make the car ride softer. |

And by the way your car would have two shocks on the back and two struts on the front.
The bounce test is a good one. Jump up and down on the front of the car. It should bounce once and then stop. Same for the rear. At eighty-nine thous, your shocks and struts are no doubt worn, but they may not be worn out. Shocks for your car should be around twenty or thirty bucks each plus installation. Struts could be about eighty or more plus install. |
