I've read the harry potter books at least 10 times each (i actually have a harry potter tattoo) and i just finished the percy jackson series and its not a rip off. Percy jackson is based on greek methology and tells the story of a kid and his friends on an adventure. If that is a rip off then almost every kids/young adult book that has ever been written is a rip off of some other book. Percy jackson is no where near as good as my harry potter but it is still a cute book!

Yea, I agree, it isn't a rip off by one author of another. From the standpoint of the moviemaking industry, the movie series is bound to be an ATTEMPT to take over the Potter audience. I think the "series of unfortunate events" movie was another ATTEMPT to steal audience from Potter.
I find original AUTHORS tend to be pretty individually creative, but the people that make books into movies are about the most lunk-headed, uncreative schlubs to walk the planet. I'm just grateful they occasionally accidentally invest in some great stuff for us to watch.
