Topic: Used Clothing | |

I am a fashion whore. A clothes horse, fop or whatever you'd like to call it. the last few years I've been doing most of my shopping in used clothing stores. Usually they don't have anything good. But, once in a while, you find something so cool at such a great price you feel like you've just scored a home run.
Last week I found a tweed blazer that fit me perfectly for just $15. Anyone else do this? |

Not too big on fashion... however, I am always glad when I find a name brand at resale.

I buy all new, but I usually have one of my female friends pick the clothes out, they seem to have a better fashion sense than I do.

There's a store here that only deals in high end used clothes. I have found dress shirts that I know sold for over $100 for as little as $12. Two yeras ago I bought a suede jacket for just $25. Later I looked it up online and found it sold new for $500!
Now if I could just find a place to buy quality skinny ties... |

Recycling is good for the environment and the soul! Occasionally I find something really great.
When I went from a 42" to a 34" waist a few years ago...I got rid of almost everything I had. Months later I saw someone wearing one of my old Brioni suits...I recognized the special buttons...and it made me feel good to know that someone was getting good use from it! |

As Jill said, it is a good way to keep from wasting things (which is one of my biggest pet peeves), but I'm generally uncomfortable even borrowing close friends clothes in an emergency, let alone wearing something that you have no idea where it's been. About the only time I don't mind is if it's with a 'significant other', but rarely do the sizes interchange, so normally not much of an issue. Thrift stores can be a good place to put Halloween costumes together though.

Heck I found a place not far away that on Thursdays everything is $1.75 and every day the price goes down to where on Wed it is a $0.25. If you go on Thursday of course that is where you start off with the better stuff would not believe how many things I have found brand new & name brand. Even got me a leather purse with tags still on it and a leather makeup bag to match with tags on it for the $1.75 can't beat the prices.
Even found several pairs of brand new men's shorts with tags on them some even the security tags from the stores they had to take off for my son. And a butt load of T-Shirts that had never been worn...... Humm actually bought almost all of my clothes from there for my Cruise back in September. I was amazed at the items I found there... |

I love thrift stores. I can get recent fashions there but go for all the vintage clothes. I have found the coolest old leather coats, fake leopard furs, Jackie O dresses. My favorite now is a leather blazer that's made of hundreds of different colored circles of leather. It's certainly a conversation starter. I also donate all my old clothes there.

I have never found anything I wear at Good Will. Around here in D/FW there are plenty of really good used clothing stores like Plato's Closet and Re-Threads to name a couple.
Shopping for used clothes is different. You can't go in looking for something. You have to have an eye and understand what will work on you. And you have to be willing to try new things. I never thought about buying a lavender shirt until I saw one for only $15. So, I tried it on and it looked great! I now wear it with the velvet blazer I found for only $20. I always get people telling me how well I dress and I enjoy that. I also love telling them that I'm wearing used clothes. But, I can never find paints that fit me. I have a 36" inseam and it seems not many people have legs that long. And I'm too thin for the big and tall stores. I have to have most things tailored to fit me. |

I hear that, Scroundrel, as far as pants go. I ONLY wear dark Dickie (or close) work pants and black Levi's jeans in 30x32. It's hard enough finding them new, let alone used!

I hear that, Scroundrel, as far as pants go. I ONLY wear dark Dickie (or close) work pants and black Levi's jeans in 30x32. It's hard enough finding them new, let alone used! I have had to pay as much as $200 for jeans because I needed some and no one else had my size. If I can get to JC Penny within a day or so of them getting their shipment I can usually find a pair or two. If not I have to wait or spend the big bucks. |
