lex: hm, interesting response. even though, i'm younger. you sound like who i was.

sometimes you gotta try and listen to what people DON'T say.
say "hi, how are you?" depends on the person, situation ...etc. has different meaning. it could be

- uh, hey it's that guy...maybe i should say something
- hey, haven't seen that guy for a long time, i wonder how he is
- arg, it's that guy again...oopse he saw me, "hi, how are you?"
- err, it's weird if we i don't say anything.
- hm, i want to get to know this person. if i say "hi" he says "hello" conversation is finished, "how are you?" will keep the conversation going longer.

words are just words, they're tools we use. a tool can be used by the right person/wrong person, the right way/ wrong way. words don't matter much to me, intention is what really counts and is the hardest to determine.

I have the attention span of a hamster on crack, so I'm really no longer much interested in having to analyze situations to the extent you mentioned above. I studied psychology for seven years, and, while it was a tremendous learning experience, what I use of it now us more reflexive/automatic than planned/thought out.

I agree with you about words -- they really are tools.

But most people use words like a turtle uses a xylophone.

OP: please excuse us, tend to make this post about us.

Well, I think there's an understanding that we all are going to relate to questions/posts/etc. from within the context of our own lives/experiences. And there tends to be a certain level of "topic drift" (I actually made up that term a couple years ago!) running through a lot of threads.
