At 17 months they don't have the understanding to know what is safe to touch and not touch. It is just part of parenting so you have to put non-kid stuff out of sight which is pretty much out of mind.

Children do learn by playing so teaching them what is a toy and what is a hot potatoe with little candy treats can help them start getting the idea. Start with small things that you just don't want them to touch like keys or or phone. If they tell you they find a hot potatoe laying around without touching they get a candy.

Useing the phrase we can look with our eyes but not with our fingers helps.

It is a frusterateing time that will pass faster than you will wish later on..

He is doing good with the firplace at my friends house. He will get close and feel the heat and ill say hot and he wil stay about 3 feet from it and everytime hewill say hot but wont touch it. I been teaching him what it means by saying hot. Like my coffee cup. When it's not hot but close i have let him touch it and say hot. So now when he goes to gab a cup that is hot. He actually cheacks it before he will grab it:smile: But if you tell him once he will know and leve that alone. Now soda cans are a chalange. He has had a tast and knows what it is. So it don't matter who has a soda or what kind, the little bogger dives for themlaugh

Soda cans are really not a good thing because their mouth, tongue, and fingers can get seriously cut.

Soda is really bad for their teeth too. It eats the enamel off really quick. Rotten baby teeth can mess up the underlying gums and permenant teeth.

When my kids were little I put them on a cibsize blanket and if they left the blanket I would return them again and again. I always had a few toys for them to play on the blanket and tended to catch them being good and reward them for staying in bounds. They knew that applied where ever we went, like grandma's or one of our friends. You have to be reasonable about how long you expect them to behave but my boys could maintain several hours if they had the tv and snacks.

I don't let him drink soda, just he knows what drinks are. He goes for them, but i will always stop him from drinking them. I'm actually having somewhat of a challange teaching him things because his mother is the type that will spoil him and give him what he wants, and not thinking about the over all picture. I'm a single dad so what happens when he is in her care will always be different when he is in my care.

I just have to work with him and i'm sure things will be fine
