I can certainly appreciate the fact that you want to say "Merry Christmas" to other Christians and I respect your right/desire to do that. Nor does it upset me when people say it to me as I know they are usually just being friendly.
However, it seems only fair, living in the land of religious freedom, that you should also be sensitive to the fact that not everyone is Christian and not everyone is celebrating Christmas. If you want people to be sensitive to your religious beliefs, than it seems only fair that you be sensitive other's beliefs. I am not a Christian. I am a Pagan. All holiday season long I have people everywhere in my town wishing me a "Merry Christmas". I do not turn around and wish them a "Happy Yule" as I don't wish to fight about it. But, I do appreciate the occasional "Happy Holidays" when I hear it. I was patronizing a local tea shop the other day and the woman who owns it is obviously very Christian. She made a point of going on about how horrible Halloween was and how wonderful it was that it was over and we could now move on to Christmas and celebrating the birth of Jesus. It's her store and her right to talk this way, but I wondered at the fact that I was a total stranger and she just assumed that I would agree with all this rather than possibly take offense. Halloween, or the correct name of Samhain, is a very important and significant holiday to me. But, I let it go as I know she didn't mean any intentional harm. It's just ignorance. So, I suggest, this holiday season, that instead of making a point of saying Merry Christmas to everyone you meet, we all make a point of trying to spread true peace and love by being a little more sensitive to our fellow Americans. Even if it means being "PC". |

As long as there are no laws against a christian's rights.. there should be acceptance. It is becoming strongly evident that is not so.
Your view is appreciated. I was reprimanded and systematically targeted by a major department chain for an incident that in the past was just considered normal. Now, all it takes is a complaint and it is treated as though a christian is the scourge of the world. I would have appreciated a sensible approach. |

You will not catch any flack from me for expressing your religious beliefs. As I sated above, I politely accept "Merry Christmas" all season long. And, Sharris, I'm sorry to hear you were treated harshly or unfairly by your employer. It is a shame when people over react. On both sides of the coin. Understanding is called for by everyone. I know I appreciate it when people are sensitive to my belief system. |

I am not religious at all but will say merry christmas and happy holidays to people out of politeness and courteousness.
I don't worry about the reason behind christmas, for me it's a day to spend with family and friends. The holidays would be better spent with people not fretting about the rhyme or reason behind it. Oops forgot to add.... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. |

Merry Christmas (early)! Thank you for posting this! I am gonna catch flack but, I simply do not care. Yes, Jesus is the reason for the season! Hence the name Christ-mas! Actually, the Winter Solstice is the reason for the season. And the Sun God Mithra was born on Dec. 25th. But the Church couldn't let pagans celebrate. So they co-opted it for their own use. |

I agree it is sad that merry christmas is seen as offensive. Its nice to see those are present who see it as a wish of blessings to others.

Christmas is not to celebrate the values of Jesus but to make money . Christmas, Easter....etc are just a business making money.
Religion is commercialized and no real religion is left . |

It not always the atheists, some of the people that are offended are from other religions. I'm an atheist and I don't mind christmas. I do not mind hearing merrying christmas or happy easter, and will celebrate the holidays with friends and family out of respect for their religion. It beats sitting at home all by myself. |

No. Like the commercialization of Christmas there have been given many added reasons for it. Christ is Christ....can't change that! Merry Christmas again, early!

people are weird
it doesn't bother me for a Jew to say to me "Happy Hannukah" or an African descended American to say "Happy Kwaanza" or to hear a Muslim say "Happy Ramadan" (do they actually say "Happy Ramadan"?) or even for a Pagan to say to me "Blessed Be" but people get all bent out of shape if I say "Merry Christmas" to em so from now on to spare the feeling of non Christians and to not start any controversy or misunderstandings with non Christians or intolerant people I am no longer gonna say "Merry Christmas" to people instead I'm gonna say "HAPPY JESUS'S BIRTHDAY AND KISS MY AZZ" |
