Well, since the Coriolis effect is know to act in that direction, and there aren't any other forces acting, maybe it doesn't take much force to point water in the same direction.

When I took physics a long time ago, they used a drain and a small pendulum to illustrate the effect.

Everything I have read indicates that the state of the water and the shape of the sink would have far more influence than the coriolis effect, which makes perfect sense to me.

However I have yet to hear from anyone that has seen their sink drain clockwise in the northern hemisphere.

Relative to whom? If I'm not mistaken, time is distorted rather heavily by the intense gravity in a Black Hole. In such a state of acceleration, it would take weeks for a person to be shredded into his/her respective components (atoms/subatomic particles).

Well toilets are generally designed to spin in a specific direction. The jets are pointed to make the water spin to more effectively clean and dispose of..... you get the picture.

First of all WHY??? If that were true...WHY would one direction be any different than another? But its not true anyway.

It is not just toilets. And it is NOT the design. I poured water in the bowel and it still went counter clockwise.

Also did experiments on two sinks and two different toilets, no jets involved.

Jeannie, I like you... I really do. But I wasn't even referring to you on my post. I was referring to his comment that he was off to flush his toilet and stating that most toilets are designed to spin. I don't know which way... I'll be sure to check mine when I get home. But most toilets angle their jets to more effectively clean. So whether these toilets spin clockwise or counterclockwise wouldn't be relevant. I wasn't speaking to the sink or a standing pool of water. Check your toilet. It likely spins because it was designed to spin.

I need to get the nozzles realigned on my toilet. Its turning into a brownhole.
