I know that a lot of us who hang out here have Facebook pages.
I don't know if this post is in the right forum, and if it's not, would the mods please move it to the proper section. Ernie Harwell was, for many, many years, the voice of Detroit Tigers baseball. One of my absolute favorite memories is of sitting with my uncle, listening to the Detroit Tigers on the radio. My uncle would keep score for every game, and he taught me a lot about the game. Sitting there, hearing Ernie's smooth, unforgettable voice, guiding us through the good times ( The 1984 World Series win ) and the heartbreaks ( any time the Tigers missed the playoffs ) are things that no fan of baseball who has ever heard Ernie announce a game, will ever forget. Ernie Harwell now has cancer in his bile ducts. He has chosen to not have it aggressively treated. Instead, he is facing it with all the grace and honor that he showed through 50+ years of broadcasting. He is 91 and feels that he has lived his life as well as any one person possibly could. He now feels that the impending end of his life is just God's way of telling him that he's had a great life and it's time to go. A sports radio host on ESPN said that, even though he doesn't personally know Ernie, from the anecdotes he has heard of Ernie that he ( Ernie ) is the guy that will not have to wait at the Pearly Gates. Instead, Ernie will just walk to the front of the line, " tip his cap to St Peter, and walk right in ". There is a drive on Facebook in an attempt to get the Illitch family ( who owns the Tigers ) to attach Ernie's name to Comerica Park, the Tigers home field. In the opinion of Tigers fans, and even fans of other teams, no one would ever deserve that kind of honor more than Ernie Harwell. I will not put the Facebook address of the cause here because it might be construed as advertising. But, I would ask all of you who have accounts on Facebook, that if you would like to honor a great man in the way he deserves ( even though merely naming the field after him would STILL seem to come up short ), please contact me through email and I will direct you to the proper page. The goal is to get 25,000 members to join us. We are currently at 20,000. Thanks for taking the time to read this. JAG |
