its midnight, and friday. so he will be partakeing in the ancient british tradition of walking down the road, drunk as a skunk, with a traffic cone one his head, waiting to see a statue to place the cone on, and singing loudly the only three lines he can remember of the last song that was playing in the pub.

then he will be picked up by the rozzers for urinating in a doorway

How do all

Nah den, how's thee all diddlin? a big ey up from Yorkshire!

I was wondering about people from the UK on these forums. Not too many about. Glad this part of the forum is up an running. I wll certainly pop in when I can.

On the subject of language and accents, for a country so small we have such a varied language within our mother tonge. Many local dialects confuse even those that live in the same country.

I live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and will sound completely different from someone in the south, west and north. The strange thing is, even within Yorkshire there are more local dialects that vary from city to city. I speak differently from those in Barnsley, which is a small town only 9 miles from me. I love having arguments on how word should be pronounced and what certain items are called.

Anyway, have a look at these http://www.yorkshire-dialect.org/dictionary.htm if you want an english lesson that will truly confuse you. These are words taken from the Yorkshire dialect. There are some words I have never heard of in here as they are used in another part of Yorkshire!

Now i'm going to teem some ale in my tankard and sup it up.

sithee

Hello Linda, very different, no? Don't get me wrong though as not all the words are still in use. MOdern language has taken over a bit and is threatening these local dialects. My gran would have spoken most of these words, where many younger people don't. I use a lot of them, but my friends don't so I guess i'm the odd one out.

It's not so much the words themselves and what they mean, but some of the accents are so strong that they are difficult to understand when spoken to you.

I live in the countryside and my home is mainly surrounded by farms. Famring folk are the single most difficult people to understand. The village I live in there seems to be some kind of 40 year time barrier before you pick the accent.

By the way call me Gez, most people do. My name is Gerard not Gerald, but it's no problem, it's a common mistake as my name is not too common here. I have been called much worse in my time bigsmile

Oh, Yes so very different! I'm sooo sorry about the name Gerard! Please forgive me.

I was just reading more of them. The meaning is so different. Like on your one post you said you were gonna TEEM some ale..Well that means Pour? Correct..I would never remember to say that. There are soo many different ones. But, like you were raised with them like we are raised in our country but Tx has it own pronunction of different words too. We do have our own language but just no dictionary for it...laugh laugh ..WE just make it up as we go!..laugh laugh

Haha, like i said, don't worry about the name. My dad's side of the family are from Belgium so I am named after one of them.

Depiste being a small country we're an island and over the centuries have had so many different invaders to the shores. I think that is why we have such a rich language in terms of local dialect. Many people also have close relations to Europe. My dad and his family are from Belgium and have Russian heritage, my mothers side of the family have Danish heritage.

The two American accents that I like are the ones from Tx (not being bias here) and NYC.

By the way it's a lovely temperature of 1c (33f) here. It snowed yesterday

I really do like the British accents. I have a friend that is fron England and I just love hearing her talk. I guess that is one reason I'm so addicted to the Brit comedies that we can get over here on Sat. and Sun. nights is to hear them little lone how darn funny they all are. I just crack up laughing at them. Expecailly Hyacinth in Keeping up Apperances!..laugh laugh

Yep, us Texans have our own way of talkin' that is for sure. We tell everyone that WE don't have an accent that its THEM that has the accent!..laugh ..I am part Indian decent. but, I do not go on the warpath. laugh ..My dad was 1/2 indian and my grandpa was full blood. My mom was well...I don't know from Indiana.

Oh my that is cold!..It was 50 when I got up this a m and its gettin cooler here. Suppose to be high of 60 but then dropping and then the high of in the 40's the next few days. I like the warmer weather the best. Where I am in Tx it hardly ever snows. I like it but I do not like the COLD that comes with it..

Well, there's one thing I love to do on a weekend, and that watch some British comedies! Not all of them are about men dressing up in womens clothing and making prude sexual comments (but some are).

Keeping up appearances was a classic, I can't believe how old it is now.

Check out the BBC website comedy archive, most of the best British comedies were made by the BBC.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/archive/index.shtml

My favourite oldies are

Dad's Army
Allo Allo
Fawlty Towers
Are you being served
Vicar of Dibley
Father Ted
Rab C Nesbit
Blackadder
Red Dwarf
Last of the summer wine
Open all hours (filmed in the next town over from me)

There are loads more, all I watch are comedies really. There are some great US shows. My favourite at the minute is Curb your enthusiasm.

I love the cold, and I love the snow. I am not a fan of hot weather to be honest! I recon it would be too hot in Texas for me laugh

Fawlty Towers
Are You Being Served
Vicar of Dibley
As Time Goes By
and Keeping up Apperances

Then there was My Hero but they took that one off, then they put one one with 2 or 3 old men in it, I don't remember the name of it. Seem like Last of the Summer Wine I have seen but it was not on long. I will have to go to that link and see what is there that may have come on here but as of now that is all we are gettin at the time. Its sad cause I just love the comedies ya'll have!..laugh

There are loads of great comedies, and some terrible ones too.

Recently we have moved away from that style of comedy. Spaced, Black Books, The Office, Extras, The league of Gentlement and the Mighty Boosh have brought something different. I love all those shows, but I still love the classics. I think i'll be watching Allo Allo tonight with a few beers and a drop of whisky. That combination always makes things funnier.
