The Drums….
M.E. Martin I hear the drums of Mother Africa Calling to me in a rhythm as Old as the color of my skin The beat sounds like the heartbeat of life I feel pounding through my veins Can’t you feel it too? Life pounding, surging bringing me To my feet making me want to dance My feet can’t help moving I hear Mother Africa calling Her voice is alive and as old as time Reminding me of my beauty Releasing me from my shame Telling me of Kings and Queens Whose bloodlines I share Of warrior men and women Bold, strong and brave Their history just now being learned The drums are beating out The call of Mother Africa Her voice is soothing in my ear I have listened to this sound As I slept in the arms of mama Or been comforted in the strong arms of daddy When nothing else could bring me peace The beat that originated from the Cradle of Civilization calms the chaos brought on by the world Mother Africa is calling in the sound of drums Her voice is familiar It is like coming home Welcoming me back into the fold Of brothers and sisters That I have just met The men move like the men I’ve always known The women look like women I’ve always seen This is family finally reconnected The drums of Mother Africa are calling Her voice reminding me of sun baked lands And beautiful sun kissed babies The beat is timeless endless and Mother Africa speaks through it It is the beat of life It calls to the freedom in my soul An ancient rhythm that is a Language of its own Her voice is fathomless But I know it as surely as I know my own I hear the call of Mother Africa The summons to come home To be cradled once more To be rocked in it’s bosom Where my creativity was born Where my heritage is worn like a second skin |
