Boy this is tough. Kind of a toss up.
One is this guy named Bob. He worked with some of the most difficult, saddest cases, as a couselor for a non-profit. Low pay, terrible working conditions, day in day out he just kept his belief and love for people listening with out judgeing and with genuine interest and empathy. Counseling, finding jobs, begging for funding, carrying the load when other counselors didn't want the tough clients. Even when he could have retired he kept working until a crushed hand made the mountains of paperwork unbearable and he finally retired. The second guy was Arthur. Arthur profoundly disabled by Cerebral Palsy spent almost his entire life in a state institution until almost 50. Totally written off by the system he was in one of the worst hell holes you can imagine. But he managed not only to learn language, but also to read, and type and emancipate himself. Non-verbal and severly physically impaired he was still one of the most eleoquent writers and public speakers of his time. He was a leader in the advocacy movement for making mass transit accessible and getting the American's With Disabilities Act written and made into law. Traveling literally thousands of miles at his own expense and often being injured because he refused to isolate him self or go "quietly" cops accross the nation came to know him by name but like his charm. But his truely endearing quality was his uncanny knack for practical jokes, daring pranks, and zinging one liners from a gaping smile and a twinkle in his eye. He could flirt with the best of them and have fun without really hurting anyones feelings. And though I know things bothered him he always managed to find a bright side, a reason for hope, and see life as a delicious gift. |

I used to go to work with him... which was kinda like this activities area for people with severe mental illness or disabilities or whatever. Thanks for your reply. Reminded me of some forgotten days. |
