My daughter was 16 before she had her first cell phone but then she is 24 now.

I did it due to she got stuck somewhere one night and no way to call me to come get her.

I have to admit when I'm around others and they are texting the whole time when they are with other people it does get to me.

Myself I do not text at all and they are passing the law as of now on texting while driving in Texas.

As far as kids having phones even though I'm to a point against them having them at such a young age. But then the way the world is now it is a peace of mind for the parent to get a hold of them anytime they need to talk to them. And with the GPS within them if they are abducted there is a chance for them to be found that way.

So I would advise all parents if your kids have the cell phones make sure the GPS is activated I mean if your gonna pay for the phone why not go the extra step and have that activated as well.

are you serious 10,000 a month...

Yeah well over 10,000. Last month 14,and change. Unlimited text is the way to go if you got younger ones. the older ones get a few thousand. I'm under 100, but I get alot of forwarded jokes.

lol, chill dude. Most of the time a text is one or two words.
example:
sup
sup w u
chillin
(btw they have unique spelling and some unusual words)
when the younger ones are asleep, go through the texts outgoing and incoming to decipher some of the lingo)

I got a cellphone aged 16, and my sister was 13. I still use pay as you go myself, and have always done so, in the sense of emergency. At least this way with a few perks of cellphone service provider I can use it to my benefit to assist greatly in lots of things I do :D

... also the work of the devil, illiteracy, and over all stupidity. tears It makes me ill and very sad.

When I was achieving my one of my double bachelor degrees (yes, I am proud), I was an intern at a high school in the English department. I corrected papers among other things. I was appalled at how many kids thought text lexicon was proper/accepted English. There is only so much the school can do -- the rest is up to parents.

I seem unyielding -- and I actually am -- because my parents didn’t allow slang to be used under any circumstances; I had to address anyone over the age of 20 by their last name (Miss, Mrs. Mr.) unless that person said, “Just call me Dave”; and I had to answer the phone, “Hello Jones residence. May I ask who is calling?”

They were tough but it paid off! I had no problem assimilating into the workforce or into higher education because my habits and my skills were instilled at an early age. smile2

No kidding! Or an answering machine with a tape!

At one point, there was NO call waiting and NO answering machines at all. If no one was home or they were on the phone -- there was just no reaching them (period) unless you rode your bike over to see them!

My mom was raised on a Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma -- almost full-bloodied -- and she teased me about using smoke signals!!

Of course, she also used to talk about tying her enemies to an ant hill and skinning them. Um, she was a bit dark. tongue2

I have 2 children and none of them has cellphones. There are more important things to spend my money for my children. In my opinion, I think cellphone is a waste of time for children. Now, prove me wrong, how many times your children will call you in a day compare to how many times they spend and waste their minutes texting and talking to friends over none-sense? They are in classrooms 6-7 hours a day. If they need me, they can use the school office phone to contact me.
When they get home, they have homework to do and I have my land line phone and computer for them to use.

I've told my children, they cannot have those things/luxuries until they start earning or working so they can feel and they know how hard to earn money.... and if it's worth to spend and waste it on something that is not valuable in life.

Call me strict, but I can guarantee you, they will remember me about what I taught them someday...

My daughter has had a cell phone for quite some years now, but it was use when she went to her dad's house, and I'm very glad we did. I was the only real stability in her life and she needed to know I was just a phone call away. Her first one was this little green phone that only had 4 buttons. She could dial one of 4 numbers (none of them her friends).

She just this year got a real one but loses the privileges more than she has them. I won't condone deleting texts so that I can't read them or texting/talking at inappropriate times. She hasn't mastered the art of using it within my guidelines yet. It costs me like 15 dollars extra per month to add her line with unlimited everything, so it's in the affordable range.

Cell phones are a big part of the way people socially interact these days. To leave him out of that loop is to limit his social growth.

I disagree... My children are the most out going kids in my family... They're socialized enuf at school when they spend 6-7hours -Mon-Fri.

Plus:
YOu and I did not grow up with all the new gadgets now. I am very social and well-mannered... so, social growth has nothing to do with all the gadgets... it is how you raise and teach your children.

Like i said, I do not rule this out of my kids..they can have all these (cellphone and expensive computer games and even a car) once they have a job to pay for it but if they expect me to pay for it? no...plus, I prefer to have face to face conversation with my children and we do that during our dinner time and after.. one of our rules at home is to let the answering machine pick up the call and we talk and interact after dinner (play games, help each other with homework or watch movie or TV shows together)
