The Majestic Theatre
224 E. Houston Street
San Antonio, Texas 78205
Phone: (210) 226-3333
FAX: (210) 226-3377
Hours: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Saturday hours vary weekly.

Recognized as one of the most ornate facilities in the country, the Majestic has long held a special place in the archives of Texas theatrical and architectural history. Located at 224 E. Houston Street in the heart of downtown San Antonio, the Majestic was designed and built in 1929 by John Eberson for Karl Hoblitzelle's Interstate Theatres, and stood proudly for many years as the largest theatre in Texas and the second largest motion picture theatre in the country. It was intended to be the most modern and ornate building in South Texas - complete with new sound and projection equipment - and was the first theatre in the state to be totally air-conditioned.

The Majestic remains one of the finest atmospheric theatres ever built. Inspired by Spanish Mission, Baroque, and Mediterranean architectural traditions, theatre patrons are transported to a fantasy villa. Walls become towers with windows of colorful glass. A rare white peacock perches on a balcony railing as doves are caught in mid-flight. Grape vines creep along the walls and luscious foliage flourishes. The vaulted "sky" comes to life as stars twinkle while drifting clouds pass by overhead. Balconies, tile roofs, arches, and columns, railings, elaborate ornamentation, statues, and a bell tower all aid in the transformation of the theatre into a mystical village.

Cowboy Breakfast features Texas-size menu

SAN ANTONIO -- Get your boots on and your appetite ready cowboys and cowgirls. It's time for the annual Cowboy Breakfast.

The Cowboy Breakfast, also considered the unofficial kickoff for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, will serve hot food and tunes for up to 50,000 early-risers. It's set for Friday, January 27th at Cowboys Dance Hall.

The free event is to celebrate trail riders and raise scholarship funds for students in St. Philip's College's Culinary Arts Program.

"We are looking forward to coming back to Cowboys Dance Hall for the third year in a row. It's a great place for a free taco and live music at 5 in the morning," said Chuck Cristian, board chairman of the Cowboy Breakfast Foundation.

This year's event is dedicated to the memory of Herb Carroll, honorary life chairman who died last year. Carroll, owner of Herb's Hat Shop who also served on the China Grove City Council, always had a smile and words of encouragement for the volunteer cooks -- and especially the tortilla warmers.

When: Friday, January 27th from 4:30 to 9:00 a.m.
Where: Cowboys Dance Hall (parking lot) at 3030 N.E. Loop 410 at the southwest corner of the intersection with Interstate 35 North.

Just like they did in the old days, longhorns rumbled through the streets of downtown San Antonio Saturday to mark the arrival of the rodeo.

A much smaller herd than in the past, but a welcome sight for people eager for the rodeo.

The longhorns have become an annual part of the Western Heritage Parade.

Cowboys on horseback rode alongside and kept the cattle moving.

Parade organizers said the cattle drive recalls the days when cowboys drove longhorn herds through the heart of San Antonio.

This is the third year for the longhorn march.

The actual rodeo starts Feb. 9 and runs through Feb. 25.
