The southern coast of Spain. Really inexpensive in comparison to most places I have visited.

The north rim of the Grand Canyon (no tourist junk)

Guam (Hawaii minus the tourists...haha)

Jamaica (yah mon, ire...)

To the peak of Mt. Evans, CO. 14,264' elev. Between Memorial Day and Labor day there is a paved road all the way to the top ('its closed all other months). Elk, mountain goats, critters I have no idea what their name was, and some of the most spectacular views in the world. My favorite place on the planet.

The drive on Interstate 40 between the Arizona border and where it meets Interstate 15 in California. Its just a beautiful drive, the land has colors in it, like in the soil.

Petrified Forest National Park, on Interstate 40, eastern side of Arizona. Really wild looking stiff there...

The badlands of North Dakota. This is on the very western-most portion of the state. It is an area where the outlaws could travel to to lose the law enforcement officers. Remote, desolate, and sort of creepy.

I recommend once in one's life, to drive the full length of either Nebraska or Kansas, I have done both. Nebraska, along Interstate 80, Kansas to full length of Interstate 70. You get a feeling of just how great our country is once you've seen the Great Plains.

Drive through the Mississippi Delta. It is flatter than the Great Plains states, and goes on for miles and miles. Plus, if you are into the blues, there are many historical places along the way.

Drive the full length of highway 441 between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC. What a spectacular and beautiful mountain road this is... make sure and bring your camera for hundreds of jaw-dropping gorgeous views.

You've just got to experience "Joyce Kilmer National Wilderness" in western North Carolina. It is one of the only (if not THEE only) forest that has never been logged for the lumber. They call it a "virgin forest". There are trees there 100, I want to say, some are 300 or more years old. HUGE maple trees like you've never seen. If you know what a rhododendron is, it is usually a bush or shrub people plant near their homes that grows about 3-9 feet tall. In Joyce Kilmer, the rhododendrons are about 100-feet tall, and have branches that kids could climb out on and jump off to go swimming...

Take a road trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia. Gorgeous views.

The Great Smokie Mountains. On the North Carolina-Tennessee border. It was my home for 7 years and one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Highly recommended.

Hike the Appalachian Trail. Wow, strap a backpack on your back and disappear into the wilderness. Nothing like it on Earth. Its just you and the elements, and whatever is in your pack. The trail starts in Georgia and ends in Maine. I hiked the portion that goes from Georgia to the Tennessee border across North Carolina. Bring a camera and lot's of Ziplocs to keep everything dry.

The Florida Everglades. If you've never been there, then a trip to is worth it... make sure you find a ride on an airboat that takes you into places where the gators are growing.

The upper peninsula of Michigan (the "U.P."). Great snowmobiling in the winter, or simply an excellent retreat away from it all in the summer. Sparsely populated, mostly a great drive or a great camping trip if you want to get away. Especially recommend Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The falls are gorgeous year-round. And, you can take a boat (with oars) over to a private uninhabited island that is right next to the falls, with hiking trails. Beautiful. Highly recommend to go there in the fall (October) when the leaves have turned their colors.

The stretch of Interstate 10 between Fort Hancock (east) and El Paso (west). When I drove through, I got off on some of the side roads to explore. Very dry and arid. There are buildings on those back roads down there that look like they were built back in a John Wayne movie era, wild west. The U.S. Border Patrol has bridges at the Rio Grande crossings. And in a John Wayne film, they depicted the Rio Grande as this gushing, 100-yard wide body of movie water... LOL... the Rio Grande I saw was a pile of dust, with a one-foot wide (if that) trickle of water. Get ya' some Mexican food down there and you'll never go to Taco Bell again... the real-deal down there, oh yeah.

Tijuana, Mexico. Drive south out of Los Angeles until you run out of the U.S. and you run right smack dab into Tijuana. I wouldn't recommend going alone. There are a lot of shops for bargain hunting, and plenty of REAL Mexican restaurants. Plus, if you like tequila, you've come to the right place. Many of the clubs and restaurants have door workers that offer you free coupons for free shots of tequila. My girlfriend got so wasted, I had to practically carry her home. (And I don't drink...LOL). Yee-bah, yee-bah, ondelay...yee-haaaa...

Kings Canyon National Park in the High Sierra mountains of California. Home to my favorite tree of all time, the huge, towering Sequoia trees. They tower in at between 250-300 feet tall, with a circumference (the length of the line that makes the outside of the circle) of 80-120 feet.

Ive travelled a lot, and its my number one activity...I love Central America, in the past 6 years ive spent months travelling in Nigaragua, Costa Rica and my favourite Panama.

Its expensive to fly there from the UK , but when you get thier things are well cheap compared to the UK.

Highlight Nigaragua.

San Juan del sur ..about a hour from the costa rican border this little town has grown in the past 5 years..beutiful beach..good for surfing..Playa Ostianal nearby is where Tortugas (turtles) come to lay thier eggs and worth a visit if the season is correct...Best restruant and Bar..Ricardos its right on the beach at san juan del sur..buy a quart btle of Flora de cana the national drink of Nicaragua y drink with ice and lemon...brilliant.

OMETEPE

Bonito islands in Lake Nigaragua with twin peak Volcanos which always seem to have a halo round them, very laid back island and a climb to the top of the volcanos is a must..but get a guide, you can get thier from Granada by boat which goes to Alta Cracia, very old church there and some old mayan/statues..you can arrange your trip to the peak of Volcano from there.

GRANADA

Very old Spanish architecture, fantastic Cathedral and the walk to the lake from the Plazza is a good way of seeing the old buildings. Nearby is the market of the Artisans in Masaya, hammocks, artwork, leather work, and much more can be purchased here.
There is a lot of poverty in Nigaragua.and watch out for conmen, but otherwise the gente are very interested in Visitors and will make you very welcome.

My next post will be Costa Rica a very green and beutiful country.

Donald

Iceland, Norway, Peru, Austria, Chile, Belize in that order :)

I have a lot of family in Northern Spain. I went to a reunion in Euskadi and toured some of the big cities - I hated the cities, they were crowded and smelled really bad, the country side and villages in the Pyrenees were nice though.

New Orleans, LA. Fairly cheap cost of living, amazing one of a kind place, friendly people. There are some not so nice areas of the city, but as long as you stay in the French Quarter and see the Garden District from inside a streetcar, you should be perfectly safe.

Costa Rica.....=...Pura Vida

This bonito country, which dont have a Army and was one of the first Banana Republics to promote Egology tourismo is reeping the benifits now as a must visit country.

Highlights

Quanacaste = once belonged to Nigaragua, The beaches here are some of the best in the whole country, Playa Pelado y playa Samara are no 1 destinations . and the people of the area have benifited by tourism..Goverment dont allow high rise buildings and try to keep all things natural..this area is beutiful and food especially seafood superb..Prices for rooms and food more expensive than Nigaragua, but you can still get arruz con cammerones or snapper for about max $5..reccomend Olgas bar on Play Pelado nr Nosara.

In Samara nice bars and couple o discos..great Venue for fun. Mirodor Samara great place to see ..the rooms all open plan with superb views of the town and beach..Max the German host makes all welcome.

Further down the road we have Tamarindo..maybe for the young, Hang out on the beach and Disco at night

Caribean

Cahuita @ puerto Viejo

Different scenery you are on the caribe now, and the National park here is buetiful walks along the beach for miles, and probly wont meet anyone exept Monkeys( cappuccino monos are here) for hrs..Punta uva is further down the coast where Christopher Colombus anchored all those years ago..Music is Reggie Reggie y more Reggie, Prople mostly Negro, food similar to Quanacaste fresh fish and cold imperial ..perfecto!

I dont go in for Capitals much, but san jose has a few good areas...San Antonia de Escuza in the hills above the central valley is a must and i reccommend the Pico Blanco hotel for at least a day trip just to see the view looking down on San Jose..at night its spectacular when all lit up.

Back to Caribe...you can leave puerto Viejo and head for Siaxola to cross into Panama and Bocas de tora or head to David and my fav place on earth Chiriqui and the Panma highlands. Also the Osa Penisula is superb, well worth a visit and then cross into Panma at Paso Canoas.

Next post Panama

Maybe I'm partial because I work in the hospitality industry in New England...but...

New England rocks!!!

The coast of Maine is gorgeous anytime of the year. Boston is fabulous to visit. Vermont is stunning!! (covered bridges and Ben & Jerry's!!)

But that's just my .02

I have to agree, I try to go to Maine and Mass at least once a year but that is based more on my close proximity (I'm in Nova Scotia), and that I have numerous relatives living in both states.

I guess that one place that I would love everybody to see is the central part of Otago in New Zealand. Not just because that is where I come from and not only because that is where my heart is but also because it is a place of incredible beauty as one looks into the distance and sees the Southern Alps.
David Livingstone, the great explorer, once said about Victoria Falls that it was a place "...where angels pause in flight..."
When I think of Central Otago those words seem so welcoming. Sounds like time to go home.
