Well, it's not uncommon. The problem is that most of the time there's this mad rush at the beginning, then there's the let down as one or both of you react to the change in your life, or have a change of heart, or whatever.

Personally, I think people don't know how to date anymore. They rush in to the relationship without even knowing their new 'love'. Dating really should be about getting to know someone... even multiple someones. It's just as much about finding out about yourself as it is finding out about the people you date. And after you've dated for a while it will become more apparent whether you feel like they are compatible with you and whether you might want to step it up and date exclusively. Instead people tend to jump right to the "Hey, I think I might want to marry you. Let's spend every waking moment together" which often leads to a harsh realization shortly after.
