Thanksgiving, last year, I was at the grocery store buying goodies for my own private day off. I was in the check out line, in front of the big windows, and the sonic BOOM hit! The windows rattled and outside a huge cloud of fire burst in the air. Then, about 5 seconds later, BOOM the transformer blew across the street.
It was surreal! Within seconds, EMS and fire went zooming by the store. After I checked out, they already had the street closed and I needed to take the long was around for a 1.3 miles trek home. My power was OK, but in the area by the store, there was a blackout. The news interrupted programming to report that a house exploded! Two people were killed, and four houses caught fire as well as the transformer blowing up. As it turns out, the residence of that home reported a gas leak three days earlier but PG&E (our gas and electric) was lagging on checking the report. Needless to say, the lawsuit is still pending. Your descriptive writing (of that SOUND) reminded me of that day. |

Your descriptive writing (of that SOUNDS) reminded me of that day. Yeah, we had a miscommunication for sure one day! You typed every other word or something, I missed the jest of your message. You said lighting burned out your computer, and it boiled down to me asking, "Why are you outside, in a thunderstorm, on your computer! You then said, it struck your house and burned the cable wiring which blew up your computer! That was funny! |

Yes I am using my phone. Wow Melody that sounds bad! Those poor people and their families. I was stone cold for the rest of the day. I had friends from all over calling to see if I was affected by the blast because it was so close to me. On the satellite map from the news, my house looked like it was next door to the explosion. In actuality, I am across the freeway but only the width of the freeway. That house and my house both are abutted against the privacy/anti-noise walls along the freeway. I was fine -- my thoughts were with the families. I know death is terrible regardless if it's Tuesday, Friday, or a holiday, but the fact that is WAS Thanksgiving made me reflect even more for those people and WHY on a holiday. Anyway, I hope you get through the dark ok! |

I work at a power plant and we had a lightning strike last year. It blew up a 14400KV transformer and blew out 2 4000kv breakers. The breakers went through a wall and bounced off a generator and went into the ceiling. One stayed on the roof the other came back down. I was sitting about 25 feet from the breakers and the transformer is just outside the building. The transformer blowing up caused the substation to trip and 1/4 of the city lost power.
