My son, whom I love very much, thinks he has something wrong with his ankles. I kept telling him it is just growing pains. (He is 13)

He did what I asked him not to, and went to see the sports trainer.

The trainer agreed with me, however now they won't let him play until he actually goes to the doctor.

The problem is, I lost my job and I have no insurance. Now he can't play sports at all. I spent $85.00 on his football cleats...UGH...

No, your not wrong to be upset, I would be too. Does he want to play the sports, ya know really want to? My 15 year old tries to get himself out of stuff by things hurting...
If he is in constant pain, you probably do need to take him in to the doctor.

Is he wearing good support shoes all day? If not, that could make a difference.

My child's feet pronate and we have to get good support tennis shoes or my child's ankle muscles hurt. We get New Balance tennis shoes for all sports.

Is there any possibility that you can take the cleats back?

Maybe buy a shoe insole and see if that decreases the pain? I put that in my child's other shoes.

The same kind of pain can happen if people are flat footed. That means good support shoes or shoe insoles too.

What about family? Does he have a father that could pay the bill?

A grandparent perhaps?

If he has to wear support shoes, perhapse football wouldnt be a good sport to be playing to begin with for the incredible physical endurance. If i told my coach i was wearing support shoes, he've kicked me off the team. Your in the right for being angry and id check to see if they'd take those shoes back. On the other hand, my father developed bad ancles at 12, complained about it, got the same answer you gave your son, and now cannot walk without an anckle support, crutch and sometimes a wheel chair. If the pain keeps up do something.

I can imagine that you are frustrated and stressed out with all of this.

oohhh, good idea, however being as you have absolutely no insurance, what happens if your boy breaks something while playing? The school doesent exactly cover a broken arm.

Yes, he wants to play sports, at least he says he does. He has played since he was 5. I would never push my child to do something he doesn't wanna do. Maybe he feels he has to. Good point!

Yes, he has always had the "good support" shoes. He has flat feet.
When he wants shoes other kids have, like Nike Shox, I always by him the good insoles so his feet don't hurt.

Tami, call ur local Health dept an see if they do sports physicals an have him checked out an cleared there. I know the health depts here do them.

An u should be able to get it at a very reduced rate if not free.

Have you tried going to the welfare office and applying for health insurance? I know a lot of people are against welfare, but sometimes circumstances are beyond our control :(

I don't know much about them, but I know there is one here and I know some who have used it.

What a crappy situation..been there, done that. It REALLY sucks.

I can understand your being upset, however your son IS 13. He came to you first, and when what you told him did not feel right to him, he thought about it, and went to get a second opinion from somebody who is obviously trained, and experienced in the matter.
On the good side, the trainer agrees with you, and obviously told your son this, which reinforces your authority and knowledge s the all-knowing mom

The side effect however, is that the school's insurance (or so I am gonna assume), is dictating that they can not take a chance, and thus require that your son get a second medical opinion on the matter prior to allowing him to play sports, for their own as well as his protection.

I know, none of this helps heal the wounded pride and wallet (I live off of less than 700 dollars a month, so believe me I know how you feel about no insurance), however, you should feel proud of your son for being responsible enough to go to a professional to get a second opinion when he wasn't sure of yours, and that he was mature enough to let you know about it, and not try to hide or deny it.

Sounds to me like he is making some responsble decisions in an appropriate manner, and you should encourage him in this so that he ontinues to do so, and is never afraid to get a second opinion (2nd opinions have been known to save lives ;) )

Check with your local hospitals, and look in the phone bu=ook under community health. those are the two best resources to find a clinic. Also go to social servies (if you havent already) and apply for medicaid along with any other assistance you need until you ar eback on your feet.
