I hate those long azz soapbox diatribes so I'll try to make this short and sweet.

Democracy is evil and corrupt. At least pure Democracy is. A tyranny of 51% is no better than a tyranny of one dictator. In a pure democracy there is no protection from religious persecution, or racial persecution, or the persecution of opposing political parties.

The founding fathers realized this and created a democratic republic with checks and balances installed into the system

One of those checks and balances was in creating two houses in the legislature. The House of Representatives and the Senate. Representatives were to be elected by the people of the states and the Senators were to be appointed by the state's legislatures. The purpose was to balance the special interests which poured cash into election campaigns against the appointed Senators who would represent each state's legislature and be able to tend to the business of government without pressure from special interests

And that was the way it worked until 1913 when Congress decide they knew better than the founding fathers and passed the 17th Amendment

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.

I think that is what brought us to the gridlock position we are in today. Senators no longer tend to the business of government according to the states that they represent and have allowed government to turn into a sandbox squabble for pre-eminence for political parties

so, short and sweet, I think the 17th Amendment needs to be repealed
