He was never known for his good looks, but a vicious attack by cruel thugs has left Mugly the dog totally bald.

The pet - crowned Britain's ugliest dog in 2005 - had his only tuft of hair ripped from his neck.

Mindless yobs also tore off one of his eyebrows and were seen hitting and punching him. Mugly, a shitzu-Chinese crested cross, was attacked after escaping from his owner Bev Nicholson's house.

The mum-of-four said: "You just can't think why these people would do such a horrible thing. It's horrible because he loves people so much he probably thought it was just a game and all they were interested in was hurting him.

“It's horrible because he loves people so much, he probably thought it was just a game and all they were interested in was hurting him.

“He was really shaken and cowered into me when he got back. He was swollen and bruised around his face and rear end.”

She added: “They had pulled out a little tuft of hair he had on his neck.

“It was the only hair he had and they even managed to take off one of his eyebrows.”

Six-year-old Mugly shot to fame after winning the dubious title of Britain’s Ugliest Dog in 2005, and even has his own website, www.uglymugly.co.uk. He has very sensitive skin which means he is prone to sunburn.

The bruised pet is recovering at his home in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

I am still crying over this mindless attack on this defenceless animal. sad sad sad

i like animals more than people, so it pisses me off when people harm them. i wonder if they know who did it? so they can be boiled in oil, um, prosecuted?

There is a suggestion this was done by children. Now here is where I agree with National Service during the long school holidays.I don't care that they are children, they are still scum in my eyes! I don't dislike children but I shudder at the thought that if the behaviour of such children are not corrected then they will grow up to be mindless adult thugs!!!!

A lot of serial killers abused animals when they were young, I've personally always been sickened by the idea of harming something that really just wants to be friendly. I heard about Mugly in that ugly dog competition...which I also don't really agree with, but not my dog.

I just have issues with the ugly dog competition, I don't really find anything positive about going on a gimmick over a dog that doesn't look all that good...dogs are loyal creatures, they should be treated with the greatest amount of respect.

definitely. animals are usually nicer than people. you feed a dog/cat and they love you forever, you feed a human and they might tell you to piss off at the drop of a hat.

I am so glad this dog is recovering.

The people that did this to him should be punished by every law there is for animal abuse and then some.

This breaks my heart tears

The person obviously knows the area and even if he/she doesn't the question begs for an answer

Why and who let the dog out who? who?

I have owned a few dogs in my time
The dog never went out of my sight

Owners apathy is much to be blamed too. Thugs are thugs no excuse for them but one has to be proactive and not moan after the event

I am sickened by this and all the other horrific mean to animal stories I hear. Unfortuneately, I think the punishment for these crimes is always way too light. Put me on one of the juries and we'll get some justice.
