I really like the old DOS games! Yes those games with horrible graphics and annoying musical sounds. Why? Maybe I just appreciate the time frame better. I must be getting old!

Not that I don't like the up to date mega graphic games today or anything, but I do like the story plots better in the old days for some reason.

What are some fascinating DOS games that you enjoyed? If you enjoyed any that is.

And if you have a link to the free download of the game then please provide it. thanks

Yeah. The old-school DOS games were the shiznit back in the day. My particular favorites were the Commander Keen games, DOOM and Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise Of The Triad (ROTT), the Space Quest series, the Leisure Suit Larry series, and D/Generation.

You can still play those older-than-dirt games using an emulator like DOSBOX, too.

Leisure Suit Larry and Wolfenstein

Both brilliant games. I even saw how they tried to revive Leisure Suit Larry in the 90s.

Archon! Have you ever heard of this one?

It was a type of chess game but in fantasy. There was really no chess involved, but you move chess type figures and when they land on the same space would have to duel each other.

Each figure had different abilities.

Do you remember Police Quest? I think that was the name. It was programmed by a cop who used his experience to make the game interesting. It was really fun and they even extended it to additional games at the time.

Yeah. Sure do. That was developed by Sierra a number of years ago with former L.A. Police Chief Darryl Gates. It started out as a kind of adventure-slash-RPG game where you had to make various decision in order to put the 'cuffs on the bad guys. In its later iterations, it kind of turned into a tactical squad-based shooter game, kind of like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, but with LAPD SWAT officers instead.

Haha I played a version of Dune (not doom) which musta come from the 80s just last weekend! using dosbox.

i loved archoon as a kid, but i tried it a few months ago and got bored really fast.

I think a lot of the old games were so much better because they put more effort into the story, and other factors besides graphics. i liked a video game that also had elements like reading a really good novel, or watching a good movie.

( zork rules! )

I still play many of the strategy games like Master of Orion, Master of Magic, Colonization, and Civilization 2. First person shooters Doom and Hexen.
Most of the old dungeon crawler DnD stuff.

Download DOSBox [http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1]

It's a command line application, Run the executable, than you'll have to 'Mount' a Folder under you file system, that contains a DOS game.. and then run it on the DOSBox's console.

For example:

dosbox c:\atlantis\atlantis.exe -c "MOUNT D C:\SAVES"
This mounts c:\atlantis as c:\ and runs atlantis.exe.
Before it does that it would first mount C:\SAVES as the D drive.

In Windows, you can also drag directories/files onto the DOSBox executable.
