My Blackness
M.E. Martin I would like to start a conversation about my blackness About this dark coffee color I am encased in This conversation isn’t about hating another color It is all about finally loving this exterior I live in For so long I believed those words I heard About being too this or too that You know way too dark or way too black Yeah my color was an issue for way too long But now let me tell you, this skin I’m in Is just as dark as it is supposed to be Yet it glows because it houses a spirit That can’t be contained by issues that’s “too this or too that” After so many years of wishing I had just a hint Of more cream in this coffee color of mine I now look in the mirror and see the glow From this brown skin and wonder what I was thinking Oh yes now I see I was tripping along with the rest Wanting to change a part of me that makes me “me” Resisting that inner voice that said You are fearfully and wonderfully made The skin I am in was chosen before the foundations And who knows better then the He who made me Dark and smooth like the richest of coffee Or maybe even the finest of chocolate A love affair is what this thing has turned out to be Because I am realizing that to love you I have to love the person that is me That means from the outside in and the inside out Mmmm yes I am loving me some of me From tone to tone and from shade to shade This skin speaks to me in the voices of All my sisters who have come to love the skin you live in |
