Hi everybody. I'm back from the pool. Mary, what are you doing with kids already in July??? I'm finishing the last 40 hours of my 80 hour Field Experience at a year round school. Couldn't do it during the school year unless I took a week off. Took the first 40 hours last summer. Going to be there all week..I'm lovin' it!!!! 7 weeks of student teaching Kindergarten, then 7 weeks of 5th grade. Be done in December, then I can start making those BIG bucks teachers make.... worst part of teaching! NCLB is Bulls***!! The school I am at this week is on the watch list....those poor babies only get 10 minutes of recess and a 40 minute lunch and recess....5 year olds need down time!!! btw...it is an all day Kindergarden! What is NCLB No child Left Behind....another screw up of our lovely government I so agree. My younger son, Brian. Started doing poorly in school when he reached middle School. I talked to everyone at the school and they told me he was lazy. He told me he couldn't do it. Finally in 10th grade my older son told me to have him tested for ADD. I thought he couldn't have ADD because he wasn't hyper. Well he does and a nonverbal learning disability. I felt so bad that this kid struggled until halfway through 11th grade. Put him aon Adderall and he won the award for most improved Grade point Average for his class this year. The system sent him to summer school and pushed him through. Last year I paid for private tutoring for Geometry just so he would learn what he needed to know. Keep fighting for the kids. Their parents need people who will help them understand I am so glad your son is doing better! You were confused with ADHD...those children are hyper. With ADD you can just blend into the woodwork. I am so sorry that it took so long for any one to realize this. Good for you to stay on top of it. I worked in Special Ed for 24 years, and we need more involved parents like you. I think sometimes the parents are wiser in knowing their child, and second, no teacher should have told you your son was lazy without testing to see if there was a problem!! Some teachers just want to push the kids through because they are so burned out! I hope your son's self esteem was not damaged. Middle school is such a fragile age! It was rough for awhile and my husband was no help. Although in my husband's defense I think he has it. Brian would tell me he was stupid and couldn't go to college. But I knew he was intelligent because he can see 30 seconds of a movie he's seen and he can tell you the movie and who is in it. He also is very good at learning and writing football plays. All signs of ADD-they focus on something and can do that same thing for hours on end. I became an advocate at the school and told the district that I did not want to hear of this happening to another child or I would start reporting these things and have their funding cut. Since it is small High School and I have always been involved the guidance counselors and principal have taken steps to work with the Middle School to evaluate kids earlier. Also encouraged one of my sons friends to get tested. He is in a single parent home and he did not know the school had to test him at the school expense. No ADD but he does have learning disabilities and is getting help now. Hopefully my son aand his friend will be the last. Thanks for going into this profession and caring about these kids. I have a college education but if you are not familiar with the signs..... I just didn't know. I will get off my soapbox now. Thanks for letting me vent |
