So most that posted seem to be against using the military to round up possible terrorist in 2002. ISN'T THAT THE SAME DECISION BUSH MADE TOO! Isn't that ironic, Bush Bashers on the same page as Bush! But Bush made his decision without the knowledge that there would be no more attacks. Songsbirds would be singing a different tune if there had been several more follow up attacks of the same magnitude. So you would let terrorist inside the US with a nuclear weapon destroy three states and not call in the military? What does it have to do with "letting terrorists into the country"? How does the Constitution "let terrorists in"? What nuclear weapon? How would a nuclear weapon destroy 3 states? No explosion is that big The military can somehow reverse a sci fi bomb that can blow up three states? I think I seen that on Star Trek We have FBI and law enforcement to arrest terrorists found in this country, jails to put them in,and courts to determine their guilt. oops - wrong choice of words I wasn't implying that we actually let them in - I meant to convey that the terroist were already inside the US. And what if they had somehow stockpiled weapons only that the military could defeat?? |

How soon one forgets....911... and the atmosphere of FEAR that existed for the American people and for the Bush administration to protect the country against an unknown enemy. The year according to the article was 2002. It is easy to say after 8 years with no attacks that something like this would be wrong but in 2002 to not have such a backup plan would have been insane.... Suppose there had been 20 more terrorist lurking somewhere in the US. AMEN!!!!! Winx... you are beating a dead horse... why bring up the 7yr old article here what is your point? It's not a 7 yr. old article. It's from today. It's not a dead horse. It's new information. Sat Jul 25, 4:02 pm That is right Winx. It just came out that Cheney wanted to attack American cities |

Hindsight is 20/20...armchair quarterbacking something that happened in 2002 is a bit hard now. Like someone said, we haven't been attacked since 9-11. What if we had? Then people would be mad that Bush didn't send in troops..jmo

Can you even imagine what this would have been like if they had gone through with it?! Report: Bush mulled sending troops into Buffalo AP 40 mins ago WASHINGTON – The Bush administration in 2002 considered sending U.S. troops into a Buffalo, N.Y., suburb to arrest a group of terror suspects in what would have been a nearly unprecedented use of military power, The New York Times reported. Vice President Dick Cheney and several other Bush advisers at the time strongly urged that the military be used to apprehend men who were suspected of plotting with al Qaida, who later became known as the Lackawanna Six, the Times reported on its Web site Friday night. It cited former administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. The proposal advanced to at least one-high level administration meeting, before President George W. Bush decided against it. Dispatching troops into the streets is virtually unheard of. The Constitution and various laws restrict the military from being used to conduct domestic raids and seize property. According to the Times, Cheney and other Bush aides said an Oct. 23, 2001, Justice Department memo gave broad presidential authority that allowed Bush to use the domestic use of the military against al-Qaida if it was justified on the grounds of national security, rather than law enforcement. Among those arguing for the military use besides Cheney were his legal adviser David S. Addington and some senior Defense Department officials, the Times reported. Opposing the idea were Condoleezza Rice, then the national security adviser; John B. Bellinger III, the top lawyer at the National Security Council; FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III; and Michael Chertoff, then the head of the Justice Department's criminal division. Bush ultimately nixed the proposal and ordered the FBI to make the arrests in Lackawanna. The men were subsequently arrested and pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges. Scott L. Silliman, a Duke University law professor specializing in national security law, told the Times that a U.S. president had not deployed the active-duty military on domestic soil in a law enforcement capacity, without specific statutory authority, since the Civil War. |

After reading a few articles on this subject I saw how the Bushies were going to get around the ban on using the military to make rhe arrests. The law prohibiting the use of military force on US soil states no military forces may be used on US soil for law enforcement purposes. What the Bushies were going to do was declare the alledged terrorist cell enemy combatants, therefore relieving the military of "law enforvement" duties. It was just a matter of giving the bad guys a designation as enemy forces and in that case they could have sent the military to arrest the terrorists without fear of repercussions. Apparently Bush must have forgotten that the FBI exists and that is their jurisdiction. I am surprised he didnt send them in anyway. The man and his cronies have trampled all over the Constitution and left it lying in the road. If I was his father I would send someone to DC to collect Dubya and bring him to the ranch for a good ol Texas ***-kicking

You people sound like this memo from 2002 really happened. Of course all avenues were considered. Many others were also, I bet. But a soundbite from 7 years ago is relevant now. We haven't been attacked either. What if we were getting suicide bombers etc...now. Some people would be blaming "The Bushes" for not acting in Buffalo...jmo |
