A Plot of Life

Surprises in life
Come as they may
Like a lump in your throat
That won't go away.
Never quite ready
For what can't be seen,
Only you'll feel it
Once there you have been.

Onward they come
Downtrodden or not,
Happy and safe,
There's a twist in the plot!
Could be untimely
Or fortunate yet
It's part of this life
The motion's been set.

Tears with emotion,
Falling like rain...
As death comes to knock
As a loved one is lain.
A heart felt so heavy
From a job that's been lost,
The burden too heavy
From the tally of cost.

The joy of a newborn
Just opening new eyes,
The laughter of children
Playing outside.
The quiet surrender
To one held so tight,
In a moment so small
Everything seems so right.

Surprises come sudden
We can change what we may
But sometimes we can't change
The hand we must play.
