The Things I've Done

I let you go,
I wasted tears.
I tried to calm
all of your fears.

I tried to love
while I felt hurt.
I gave you wine
while I took dirt.

I cried myself
to sleep at night,
and wondered if
you'd make things right.

I stood with you
because I care,
but when I needed
you weren't there.

I gave my heart
for you to break.
The more I gave
the more you'd take.

I showed you shelter
from the storm,
passed my coat
to keep you warm.

I hoped in time
that you would see,
the one you need
is only me.

I gave you hugs
and kisses too,
but she's the one
who's there with you.

You had the choice,
her or me.
You took the lover
and I got free.

I pushed it all
into my head,
while you brought her
into your bed.

I see it now,
all I missed then,
just how wrong
life could have been.

I thank you for
the way you ran.
As I've moved on
because I can.
