There is another side to the smoking situation when it comes to combat...

Something our military has as necessary part of the job discription.

One can smell a cig from at least 4 miles if a gentle breeze is blowing.

You can actually track a unit by the number of smokers it contains.

Very dangerous to your units life expectancy.

If thats true why arent they already banning smoking on the battlefield?

Id have no problem not smoking in that situation.

But id have a big problem if i am told not to, at times when its safe to do so.

Id quit the army over it. They cant run your entire life.

I think it is a good idea but will be hard to enforce. I had to get out of active service to give them up. Of course it is shown that the higher education level you are the less likely you smoke. I think the military should make it easier to take classes while on duty. I got out of active after 8 years and went to college where there were less people smoking. I really quit for a man - lol. But I think being educated & out of active service helped me quit. Smoke free now for 24 years......happy

I've worked in hospitals. You would be surprised to see how many doctors and other specialties were in the outside smoking area smoking with me. I'm educated and I smoke. I know other educated people that smoke too. We started smoking before we got educated. Your college was different from mine. I saw plenty of people smoking before they took their finals.

Congrats for having quit.flowerforyou

You have a point. Some areas do not have the high risk.

Take that destroyer you mentioned...

A Crack Seal Team (or its equivalent) could have that destroyer in minutes with a smoker on deck.

Four miles away in a gentle breeze... All the way down the wake.

If your out on a patrol you don't smoke because of the fact it can be smelled and seen from a distance. When you are back at base camp there is no light or smell discipline.

If I can smell the smoke of the sentry... He will never even know when I slip behind him and slip a grenade into the command tent.

While some can contain the need for a smoke others will sneak one.
Patience will allways lead to a point in time when that one will smoke.

There is no safe place in a combat zone.
