Well we have gotten them at work before more then once and all I do is take out the trash buy the raid spray for flying insects and spray the trash can real good before I put the trash bags back in and then the new trash bag and spray it in the air the outside of the trash can ect a few times a day and have gotten rid of them within a day or two and yes we got them mainly due to banana's. You have to remember once you have them they lay eggs on everything they land on so use the disinfect wipes to wipe it all down that way it kills the eggs that are left. For each time they hatch they are laying more eggs so you need to do the disinfect every day for a few days. Best way are the wipes you can buy now makes it easier.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. (Hey, somebody was gonna say it!) There's an echo in here. |

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. (Hey, somebody was gonna say it!) Babe, I told Krisit you mentioned that banana in the bottle thing. Good gosh that sounds like a dirty joke! Well, I woke up this morning to check on my TWO bowls of white vinegar. And sure enough there were the fruit flies, all lined up along the sides! I tried to carefully pick it up to dump it into the sink, all of 6 inches away, and I got some of them down the drain but not all. UGGGG! NOOOOOOO!!!!! Don't put 'em in the sink drain! They'll breed in there! You need to remove them from the house itself! |

They can be a real pain in the ***, but they're really not that difficult to get rid of. I always took an empty 1-litre Pepsi bottle and put a banana peel (or a part of a banana) inside the bottle, then left it uncapped overnight in the area where they were most prevalent. In the morning, just about all of them would be either inside the bottle, or around the lip of it. Then I'd sneak up and cap the bottle off, trapping them inside.
Boy, do they get PISSED! All you hear is "bzzt-bzt-bzzzzzt-bzzzt", and they're frantically (and futily) trying to get out. Personally, I like to taunt them and pick on them a while. I wait until they finally settle down, then I'll shake or smack the bottle, just to piss 'em off again (THAT'LL learn the little muthas!). Then, I sometimes wait until they're all dead in there, just to satisfy my own morbid pleasure....or not....and then I just throw the bottle in the trash. Done deal! Repeat as necessary. |

put some sweet juice or honey in the bottom of a cup (about an inch deep). take a little sandwich bag and cut a small hole out of one of the corners and push that end halfway down inside the cup (not touching the liquid though). rubberband the bag around the lip and leave the cup sit out, they will land on it, crawl down the bagfunnel you made, and die inside.

Thanks. Yep that seems to be the prevailing thing to do. I guess I'll go to the grocery store in a bit and get a banana or two, some honey, fruit juice and what ever else I need for my murder plot!

Had the same problem last year. Go to wikihow and search for fruit flies, plenty of good advice there Hi Andy. Yes, I did do that. Together with the info here. It is just so nasty to me. I found a vacuum cleaner great for getting rid of the live ones. Tick is to eliminate their breeding area next!! |
