Being a fisherman myself, my guess would be that it's an enjoyable sport, as well as a relaxing activity. It's quiet, it's peaceful, it's a great form of comaraderie. It's best enjoyed during the warm months of the year, and if you've ever gone fishing, anyone can tell you that it's a great feeling putting up a fight taking a nice-sized fish out of the lake, and a proud moment to show the worthy adversary. Nothing to do with "I caught it, you cook it? 
Makes no difference to me. If I decide to keep it, I can filet it and cook it. By the same token, if anybody else wants to eat, they'd best be gettin' to fishin' and learn how to filet 'em.
