SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California lawmakers remain at an impasse over solving the state's $24.3 billion deficit as the state controller prepares to hand out roughly $3 billion in IOUs. A Friday morning vote on a portion of the Democratic budget plan fell short of the necessary two-thirds support in the Assembly. Lawmakers were planning to work through the weekend. State Controller John Chiang says without a budget revision, he will have to start issuing IOUs as soon as Thursday. The state will not have enough cash to meet all of its payment obligations as the new fiscal year begins. Among those who would not get paid until after October are students expecting college fee assistance, low-income seniors and the disabled, and vendors that provide an array of services. |

You guys realize that California has the highest combined taxes in the whole US, right behind Hawaii? So raising the taxes on something already that high is going to have the opposite affect, companies not able to do business there, will leave to move to less taxed states. Making the unemployment go up faster and have less tax money coming in. The problem in California is with spending of tax money, not what percent they bring in.

Have you ever wondered what states have the highest per capita state taxes?
Vermont is the highest with each person paying $3,600 per year. Next is Hawaii followed by Wyoming, Connecticut, and Minnesota, according to the U.S. Census Bureau for 2005. What prompted me to look into this was a statement made by a Fox News commentator who said how come the highest taxed states are in the worst financial shape referring to New York and California. But this is incorrect. Per capita California is ranked 10 and New York 11th so they are not the highest taxed states. http://ztruth.typepad.com/ztruth/2009/05/highest-state-taxes-per-capita.html Fox news, no big suprise |

California bankrupt? I thought the republican tax cuts would have that economy booming? Arnold hate to say it but you were wrong dude! "The Governator" inherited a horrible financial mess, and his efforts to fix the problem has met with intense lobbying from special interests groups. It happens that it was created under the control of the dems, but these days I think both parties are equally to blame for poor spending. |

The Republican govenor doesn't want to raise taxes to generate the money needed to pay for these critical services I knew the people in California were idiots but they took the cake when they elected a movie star with no government expierence.I can't say I am surprised their state is a big mess.I'm sure they will elect some other idiot to take his place that has no experience either.Arnold may say he is a Republican but he doesn't act, vote,or talk like one.If Arnold is anything he is a liberal since he doesn't have anything in common with the Republican party way of thinking. California reaps what it sows.Giving illegal immigrants free health care, education, and welfare was a stupid idea and is costing them over 7 billion a year.Lets not even mention the out of control taxes especially the billions they have spent trying to "go green".$750,000 for a new hybird bus,6 dollars a gallon for bio diesel. |

California is in a world of hurt. It will ripple across all the states, but my God California, quit giving handouts to non taxpayers...a lesson to be learned here America. There are no free rides or Government Programs that do not have to be paid back.

The Republican govenor doesn't want to raise taxes to generate the money needed to pay for these critical services I'm sure taxing the middle class 90% of their income will solve their problems... You do realize that was one of the bigger reasons for the revolution against England right? |

The Republican govenor doesn't want to raise taxes to generate the money needed to pay for these critical services Not if many of the people using and benefiting from these services (education, health care, law enforcement...etc) are not paying taxes themselves. How many illegal aliens are we paying for in our prison system? California is paying alot. jmo |
