call your local extension office tomorrow...

I dunno...I have black bears and raccoons that scare off all the birds! ohwell

You have Black Bears?!

I wasnt aware of that when i was roaming around your property drunk!

They certainly never got mentioned during the 'safety meetings'!

see, the safety meeting worked!! they kept you safe!!

the bears don't come around when it is noisy...

generally anyway...

We were being noisy?! haha

There were times late at night when everyone else had gone to bed that were pretty quiet. But i was generally with Andy, who is much larger than a large bear!

The birds/creatures are back again tonight... I didn't get a chance to call the extension office today.

After staying up all night listening to bird calls trying to figure out on my own what it could be I have concluded that these are some strange prehistoric breed released from the Center of the Earth by mining on the mountain above my house. lol

Oh i've yelled at them and my dog has barked his head off. They stay in the trees where I can't see them I can only hear there calls that let me know they are there. I've seen them on the ground only once and in flight 3 times. I looked around today to see if I could find some kind of nest or roost... I had my binoculars out and still couldn't see any signs. I think they are probably coming down from the mountains at night to hunt.

good deal!! it seems like this year is a very active one for animals coming out of their natural area for food/feeding!

anything you can do to keep them at bay?

I agree, StarTraveler...black bears are generally pretty skittish around people and easily frightened away...I still like to keep my distance and keep them out of my yard if possible...

Glad the mystery is solved!!

My back yard is being taken over by some sort of HUGE night birds. Every night they keep me up calling to each other. I went out on my back deck earlier and saw 3 seperate birds swooping from tree to tree. One landed in my yard and appeared to be atleast 2.5 feet tall. I never see or hear them during the day. At first I thought they were owls but i've never heard an owl make the sound these birds do. My porch light isn't bright enough for me to get a good look at them and I don't own a strong enough flash light. What could these things be. I'm afraid to walk my dog out there when he needs to go at night. I am so scared I had to walk out to my pool to turn on the pump w/an umbrella over my head tonight. As if an umbrella would protect me from such huge birds.

What are these things?!? Any wild life types out there have an idea?

I know what whipoorwills sound like and ruled that out right away.

At 5am this morning I finally got a good view of these things and found out they were owls. They are getting braver staying later and coming out earlier. The sound they are making is a Pair Calling. You can hear them here http://www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=Tyto&species=alba .

They make this screeching sound all night, every night.
