Topic: Another problem with Vista | |

A link to the article:
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/05/15/vistas_long_goodbye_continues/ An excerpt: Seven weeks ago, when we first reported Vista was causing many machines to stall indefinitely while deleting, copying and moving files, we were sure the problem was caused by a bug that would be fixed relatively quickly. After all, Vista is Microsoft's flagship product. It's also an operating system. And everyone knows deleting, copying and moving files are among the most basic tasks any operating system can set out to do. Now we don't know what to think. Vista's Long Goodbye, as we've come to call this bizarre phenomenon, continues unabated. No amount of diagnosing by the untold number of confounded sysadmins sheds any light on the problem's cause, and Microsoft has yet to acknowledge its full extent. |

Microsoft's inability to fix a defect in such a basic feature has led to
its share of conspiracy theories ... The top contender: The inability to copy files without stalling isn't a bug at all, but rather the result of a digital rights management feature designed to protect Hollywood (even if the rest of us have to cuss our way through four hours deleting a few gigs worth of crap). |

Right you are Mass. I posted a link in another post awhile back about
this whole DRM thing. Losing our digital rights. I figured that it would have gotten more attention than it did. I guess that people won't gripe untill all of thier rights are gone. By then it will be too late. How to fix the problem now? Go install a fresh new gnu/linx OS. |

its tempting ...
I was looking at buying a new laptop, but two things put me off, firstly, would I be able to get rid of Vista, and secondly should I buy a Mac? I solved the issue by completely wiping my current laptop and reinstalling everything from scratch. Net ... what is your opinion of Ubuntu? (or whatever it is called) |

Oh, I forgot to note that the second posting above is not my words - its
also copied from elsewhere. Belushi, I used a previous version of Ubuntu about a year ago, and was completely satisfied with it. The latest version is supposedly much better. Its very easy to give it a test drive, just download an ISO from the link below, burn it to a CD, and run it as a live CD. This will -not- install anything on your computer nor effect your system in any way (unless you tell it to). http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download |

Thanks MT ... I might just do that

yeah, ubuntu is kinda cool. Also does this interesting windowing thing
where they shake like jello when you move them. It's really really cool...for like 2 minutes. Luckily it can be turned off (very easily...unlike annoying ms features which linger forever). |

Unbuntu is a great starter linux os. Pretty user friendly. What makes
that possible is a great .RPM packet selection for easy installation of progs. Of course the best installs are from source, but if the RPMs are for your linux distro then there are no problems. Mandrake mandrivia is also pretty good for begainners. |

So true! We'll see if the beryl and compiz people do something more pleasing or useful, down the line. |

Yea the jello window is cool. Have you seen the cube desktop? It's neat
also. There are also the 3D window desktop in Linux, where you can even fold your window like a piece of paper.Cool. |

While I work with Solaris Unix Servers, I am also burdened by Microsoft
servers. However, I do like Windows Vista Ultimate and I haven't had any problems with it. People make it out to be a piece of trash and that isn't the case. It's the best os Microsoft has released. Okay, okay, it's stolen. What hasn't Bill stolen? |
