Tell me why do you enjoy science (and which ones). Do you use it for your work or is it just for personal interest?
What drives you to enjoy philosophy. Which philosophists do you enjoy reading or watching? What have you learned from them? Share your biggest discoveries on the subjects. |

I have spent a long career deeply immersed in math, physics, and material science. Oddly, my minor in college was psychology, so I have followed trends and advances in that field too, just as a matter of interest. The combination of advanced technology and the workings of the human mind have been some of the most fun of mingle topics.
I have also had the pleasure to work with some advanced thinkers on some advanced topics. Politics rules, unfortunately. Even some of the top people in the energy industry admit we could have done, and should do, many things differently. For example, consider the state of nuclear power. The philosophy of the "peace movement" and the resulting excessive control by the EPA, put the safest, most environmentally clean, and most economically feasible source of power on the back burner for decades. And now we are paying a terrible price. We should have done what France did with atomic power. We should be using natural gas to power vehicles, not make electric We have had the technology to provide electric mass transit to all our big cities for decades, but let GM and Firestone tear up the tracks to sell buses and tires. Only now, at a point in time of crisis, is the electric car considered "viable". Is this philosophy or stupidity? Our world suffers from information overload. There was a time when the people who were tops in their fields, like Einstein, were known and respected. Nowadays, someone with the ability to create a good website can make any fool a hero. Much of mankind has yet to learn that truth comes with understanding, not the written word. |

You are surely well versed and educated and I have noticed that in all of the replies you give concerning philosophy, science, or even politics. Your replies are very educational and they allow us to contemplate or reflect on the subject in hand.
I hope that America will change to different alternatives concerning energy and transportation possibilities. I am sure they will in time. They have never failed to surprise the world one way or another. There are many creative people in this country. I would say keep on educating, debating, and explaining what you feel is important let alone educational for everyone. Only through communication can we as a people find alternatives for a safer and more prosperous planet. I wish I would have specialized in one particular subject in science in my lifetime, but I haven't so this is my opportunity to read on more knowledgeable people opinions (such as yourself) and try to understand the subjects. It also allows me to order books on the subjects or research on the internet to read about it. Together we Minglers can educate each other and even discover new possiblities of what could or how things can be. |

Great post MetalWing!
Its sad how many well meaning people completely wrote off nuclear energy. Astro-turfing is common practice today, and I wonder whether the coal and oil industries secretly funded scare campaigns and 'grass roots' efforts against nuclear. Personally, I would love to see photovoltaic pavement and shingles in widespread use. Much of mankind has yet to learn that truth comes with understanding, not the written word.
Well said. |

I have no formal education in the sciences or philosophy but have always been interested in why we do what we do, react the way that we do, live the way we do and accept that which is unacceptable.
So I am forever reading these threads, sometimes commenting sometimes as just an observer. Due to the MS my mind is not a sponge anymore and I struggle with these topics but I still love to read them and contemplate them for a time. Keep up the good works, the mind is a terrible thing to waste. ![]() ![]() |

i don't not here anyway
why because when some that lose a debate on something or gets proven wrong they resort to personal attacks and grammar and spelling issues so enjoy i will refrain from this forum most of the time because it is not about thoughts and intelligence and theory it is about 10th grade english be well ![]() |

My greatest discovery is that I just don't have the head for it.
Though I like reading through the thread, and learning a bit as I go, most of the time I get lost in the middle, it's just above me. For me the most important bit is the learning, some things I pick up, and a lot get lost again. |

Don't worry some of us value what you post. I am one of them ![]() |

Adj,
I definitely appreciate the many times you argue on the side of liberty, and remind people that sacrificing everyone's liberty to compensate for a few peoples' lack of self-restraint is a bad idea. There are many threads where I'm preparing to present this view, and then I read that you are already doing so. |

I got started in science and philosophy much later.
I enjoyed it in class, but was not really that kid that was really into it. I was always in my own world. I would listen to lectures and lessons and as soon as something came up that interested me I would be off in my own world fantasizing and branching off from the main idea and miss the rest of the lesson. When first I went to college I followed my imagination again and went to an arts school for theater. I actually remember the day, just over 3 years ago now I was at lunch with a colleague of mine from a software development company where I did IT support. We where talking about computer chips and he was explaining quantum tunneling and how original diodes worked. Teleportation is just one of those ideas that spark my imagination like a match to gas. I downloaded a few gigs of physics books, read some popular books, and a few professional books (looking back I didn't understand most of it). It wasn't enough so I enrolled back in college for physics. It was such a wondrous thing and physics knowledge is a funny thing. It makes you see everything around you in a different way, you take the proven theory and allow it to color in the details of everything around you. As you start to understand the amazing magnitude of chemistry, and molecular structures you start to see everything around you in a different light. . . When you truly comprehend the concept of thermodynamics and know that heat is not a thing in its own right, but the flow of energy . . . you begin to visualize the movements of molecules, you start to imagine that light is emitted from all objects in the form of thermal radiation . . . . you come to know things about nature that makes you seem like a fly on the wall in a very important room. I think my love of imagination allowed the beauty of scientific knowledge to intoxicate me with its power. |

I don't know but for some reason I have a feeling you will discover or invent something unique in the future. I just feel that it can happen. You might be 60 years old when it happens, but I think there is a good chance of it. Keep studying and imagining like you never had before. It will be rewarded one way or another ![]() |

BTW Smiless, a lot, if not most, of these threads would not exist but for your input and imagination. You deserve credit. You have a good mind and an adventurous spirit. Well done.

I guess I have always been interested in science. After studying physics and philosophy in college it gave me a springboard into delving deeply into topics that I care about. I'm currently working on metaphysics theory and a geometry proof in my spare time, when I'm not concentrating on my art or work. I like the fact that there is always something else to explore and question, no matter how deep you dig the rabbit hole goes a little further.

Well done. ![]() ![]() ![]() Well thankyou kindly for the compliment. It is not often I get those and it really made my day. I truly have an imaginative spirit. Probably too much for my own good. ![]() Primarily curiousity is what brings me to post on these threads. Unfortunately only little of what I read I will remember later on ![]() What I do realize is everyone has different interests. Those things that really interest a person will have a larger success rate of remembering and keeping that information. I wonder why that is? That is concerning how brain activity works. In the end I hope that I can retain some of the great quotes philosophists give and some of the discoveries and knowledge science offers. ![]() |
