Topic: Worldwide GPS may die in 2010, say US gov | |

turning the map give you real turn visualization (good call fran ) so if yer not writing down yourr route (which you should) it is easier to remember which way to turn Can't they remember which way to turn just by looking at the map, without turning it to align with my route. But, that's why what they do is funny. It looks like just "loading" the map in their memory isn't enough for them, they need to almost "try" it, you know? I mean you're seeing someone doing it, and you have this funny expectation, that the next thing they would want to do is perform the route turn by turn, right on the curb, with a toy car or something.... Funny... I don't mind it, it just rocking funny to observe. The things we do.. |

Methinks GPS wont die. Because if we stop keeping up with GPS satellites, there will be other nations that would be willing to "take the flag" by providing their own GPS.
So, it just might be that in a near future, the GPS satellite names will remind us of something Chinese... |

GPS uses 24 main Satelites and 3 spares orbiting the earth in 6 different orbits. They are highly unlikely to fail on their own anytime soon.
The article is probably referring to the idea of moving the satellites further out because the Chinese now have the ability to shoot them down. They demonstrated this ability just a yr or so ago. It requires 3 sats to accurately pinpoint lat and long and a 4TH to determine altitude. The accuracy of civilian GPS is not as accurate as the GPS used by the military. |
