Gee..reading is hard...
Sorry... I have a unique perspective on reading because both my parents are librarians. Oh, my being old might be a factor too. It wasn't so long ago...thirty years ago when I was in high school when people saw this coming. So, that in mind... READ The Federalist Papers 1984 Welcome to the Monkey House Fahrenheit 451 Animal Farm The Bible Of Mice and Men The Age of Reason Lady Chatterley's Lover Origin of Species To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Sawyer Siddhartha Catch-22 Please...I beg you read...read to defeat ignorance..read to defeat darkness...read to create...read to inspire...read...prove we are not just superstitious reactionary animals...I dare you! |

Ahhh... reading is boring, I just make up my own shee-at!
The Federalist Papers??? By Hamilton? That is quite a task! |

I didn't think that book existed anymore
It probably doesn't... that was from 1st grade memory. |

The only real problem I have with reading older books is that its hard to understand. Anything written before 1950s will confuse me unless there are summaries around that explain it.
Its kinda cool to see how the language evolved over time tho |

Shoot low Ma...he's ridin' a pony!
I wasn't going to come back to this forum...it was simply to taxing. Lest my meaning be misconstrued here is a definition for you. taxing adj : not easily borne; wearing; "the burdensome task of preparing the income tax return"; "my duties weren't onerous; I only had to greet the guests"; "a taxing schedule" [syn: burdensome, onerous]http://dictionary.die.net/taxing Back I came to participate in this fresh...or not so fresh mess. Nothing here changes... Chase your tails, make assumptions, call names, sit on your bottoms, embrace ignorance, worship false idols, fear, do what you are told, embrace revisionist history, close your borders your eyes and ears and your minds, suck up television, stay in the house, shut out the voices of those not like you, instill fear in your children, eat McDonald's and beg for more Kool-aide...yep...you all have it right! Yep...all that is easier than reading. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Nice job folks.... Welcome to the decline and fall of the United States of America....piss on sheeple...you deserve it. Bye For Now.....as always your servant, Wyn Ann |

The only real problem I have with reading older books is that its hard to understand. Anything written before 1950s will confuse me unless there are summaries around that explain it. Its kinda cool to see how the language evolved over time tho No offense meant to poster. But here is the problem. The saying goes something like "Those who don't remember history are condemed to repeat it." It is an ignorance in this country, and around the world for that matter, that no one recalls the lessons of history. It has been said that when changing the thinking of the masses it is futile to change the mind of the majority of the people as there minds have been set and the time of history has formed there thought and beliefs. To change the mind of the people it must be done through the children mostly in there "formative years" It is the responsibility of the parents to teach there children. The problem is the parents of the children have been exposed to the same school system policies that their children are. They have no clue what the true history of the world is to teach their children. The school system is defiantly not about to start doing that when people like Bill Ayers is setting the standards of how are children are taught. |

Hi Lynann,
I love librarians. My cousins are both librarians. They always know the best places for info and the best internet cartoons. Plus librarians stood up to the FBI back when no one even knew we were being spied on. Excellent list. I'm only missing two: The Federalist Papers X (Wrote an analysis of them as propaganda.) 1984 X Welcome to the Monkey House X Fahrenheit 451 X Animal Farm X The Bible X Of Mice and Men X The Age of Reason Lady Chatterley's Lover X Origin of Species X To Kill a Mockingbird X Tom Sawyer X Siddhartha Catch-22 X I'd suggest a couple of others: War is a Racket, Smedley Butler (very short but rich) Anything (short story, novel, column, napkin scrawl, literally anything) by Harlan Ellison |

please read "Brave New World" and would you pass me some Soma, please. be seeing you

I would add Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut to that list and The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx.
The only real problem I have with reading older books is that its hard to understand. Anything written before 1950s will confuse me unless there are summaries around that explain it. Its kinda cool to see how the language evolved over time tho drinker That kind of statement makes me wonder how many "old" books you have actually read. |

Why not offer up some more material that imparts wisdom?
How about required logic puzzles from the first grade? Help to wire the brains for logical thinking... for reason! It will take care of itself from there... |

Broken by design?
Sorry...but...teach your children to read...do not expect someone else to do it. Start by reading to them...it's a proven method. Funny...people howl about sex ed in schools saying that should be a parents area but expect schools to do the whole bit or at least the lions share when it comes to reading. I was reading before kindergarten and my parents both worked full time. Shut off the television and the computer...sit the wee one in your lap and read. You might be surprised by what happens. Oh...think there is a conspiracy to make the citizenry stupid? You might be right. There is one sure way to fight it and it isn't pissing and moaning on line...it's education. Knowledge is power. |

Broken by design?
Sorry...but...teach your children to read...do not expect someone else to do it. Start by reading to them...it's a proven method. And??? Funny...people howl about sex ed in schools saying that should be a parents area but expect schools to do the whole bit or at least the lions share when it comes to reading.
Some may... I was reading before kindergarten and my parents both worked full time.
And??? Shut off the television and the computer...sit the wee one in your lap and read. You might be surprised by what happens.
One might! Oh...think there is a conspiracy to make the citizenry stupid?
Conspiracy??? Not what I said. There is one sure way to fight it and it isn't pissing and moaning on line...it's education.
Knowledge is power. Who is 'pissing and moaning'? Who are you to assume that you know, or have any idea of exactly what I do or do not know? Knowledge??? Define it! Critical thinking skills, logic, and reason are power. Those things are not being developed by the curriculums(design) that are in place in public schools. The system itself does not produce what is necessary. Look around at the average American citizen. Your argument has no substance. Taxpayers pay for public education. I am a taxpayer. It is clear that the system is broken. |
