It's all too confusing for me. Do I need to rape the woman before or after the wedding? I think we need to clarify this little technicality first so I can know how to proceed. I think you better rape her before, during and after just to make sure. Boy! Talk about your nyphomaniacs. |

1. Polygynous Marriage Probably the most common form of marriage in the bible, it is where a man has more than one wife. 2. Levirate Marriage When a woman was widowed without a son, it became the responsibility of the brother-in-law or a close male relative to take her in and impregnate her. If the resulting child was a son, he would be considered the heir of her late husband. See Ruth, and the story of Onan (Gen. 38:6-10). 3. A man, a woman and her property — a female slave The famous “handmaiden” sketch, as preformed by Abraham (Gen. 16:1-6) and Jacob (Gen. 30:4-5). 4. A man, one or more wives, and some concubines The definition of a concubine varies from culture to culture, but they tended to be live-in mistresses. Concubines were tied to their “husband,” but had a lower status than a wife. Their children were not usually heirs, so they were safe outlets for sex without risking the line of succession. To see how badly a concubine could be treated, see the famous story of the Levite and his concubine (Judges 19:1-30). 5. A male soldier and a female prisoner of war Women could be taken as booty from a successful campaign and forced to become wives or concubines. Deuteronomy 21:11-14 describes the process. 6. A male rapist and his victim Deuteronomy 22:28-29 describes how an unmarried woman who had been raped must marry her attacker. 7. A male and female slave A female slave could be married to a male slave without consent, presumably to produce more slaves. and of course … 8. Monogamous, heterosexual marriage What you might think of as the standard form of marriage, provided you think of arranged marriages as the standard. Also remember that inter-faith or cross-ethnic marriage were forbidden for large chunks of biblical history. http://unreasonablefaith.com/2009/04/29/the-varieties-of-biblical-marriage/ I love to debate posts from Anti Christian websites because they come out looking so stupid it's laughable.I could also care less about proving anything to the atheist who frequently try to unsuccessfully pick and choose a verse and base the entire Christian religion off of that verse. If you are wondering why Christians are not replying to this topic is because as usual it is nothing more than slander. If you cared about debating you would post what the majority of Christians practiced instead of what one in a million practiced in the stone age times. Before I start this debate there is something you need to understand. In the bible you have verses quoting God and Jesus. If the bible is not quoting God and Jesus then it is simply the writings of one holy man. This is not to say that anything they write is just their opinion, but if I was going to study the bible and make assumptions on Gods rules and laws,I would say anything that God and Jesus said is absolute and with out question.Any laws, rules,or theories from the holy men who wrote the bible can be questioned against the word of God and may even be corrected. Another thing you fail to understand is that Christians both in the early times and the present do not take everything the bible says literally. It would be absurd to try to live your life like the people did thousands of years ago.Present day Christians do not live in mud houses, travel hundreds of miles by foot, make animal sacrifices, stone women, and many other hundreds of traditions and rules that they lived by in that time. With that said.Your posts on marriage are nonsense because no Christians in the world follow those rules. It is not to say they are wrong but they certainly were not the world of God nor were they a commandment. Also you said that polygamy was the most common form of biblical marriage???Completely false and inaccurate. One man and one woman was,is,and always will be the sacred and followed form of Christian marriage. In the Old Testament, the Bible says: Leviticus chapter 18 (GWT) 1 The LORD spoke to Moses, 2 "Tell the Israelites: I am the LORD your God. 4 Follow my rules, and live by my standards. I am the LORD your God. 5 Live by my standards, and obey my rules. You will have life through them. I am the LORD. 6 "never have sexual intercourse with anyone related to you by blood. I am the LORD. 7 "Never have sexual intercourse with your mother. She is your own mother. Never have sexual intercourse with her. 8 "Never have sexual intercourse with your stepmother. She is related to you through your father. 9 "Never have sexual intercourse with your stepsister, whether she is your father's daughter or your mother's daughter. It makes no difference whether or not she was born in your house. 10 "Never have sexual intercourse with your granddaughter, whether she is your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter, because she is related to you. 11 "Never have sexual intercourse with a daughter of your father and his wife. She is your own sister. 12 "Never have sexual intercourse with your father's sister. She is your paternal aunt. 13 "Never have sexual intercourse with your mother's sister. She is your maternal aunt. 14 "Never have sexual intercourse with the wife of your father's brother. She, too, is your aunt. 15 "Never have sexual intercourse with your daughter-in-law. She is your son's wife. Never have sexual intercourse with her. 16 "Never have sexual intercourse with your sister-in-law. She is your brother's wife. 17 "Never have sexual intercourse with a woman and her daughter or a woman and her granddaughter. They are related. Doing this is perverted. 18 "While your wife is living, never marry her sister as a rival wife and have sexual intercourse with her. 20 "Never have sexual intercourse with your neighbor's wife and become unclean with her. 22 "Never have sexual intercourse with a man as with a woman. It is disgusting. 23 "Never have sexual intercourse with any animal and become unclean with it. A woman must never offer herself to an animal for sexual intercourse. It is unnatural. " In Matthew's Gospel in the New Testament, the Bible says: Matthew chapter 19 (TEV) 7 The Pharisees asked him, "Why, then, did Moses give the law for a man to hand his wife a divorce notice and send her away?" 8 Jesus answered, "Moses gave you permission to divorce your wives because you are so hard to teach. But it was not like that at the time of creation. 9 I tell you, then, that any man who divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, commits adultery if he marries some other woman." The Old Testament prophet Malachi prophesied: Malachi chapter 2 (NLT) 16 "I hate divorce!" says the LORD, the God of Israel. "It is as cruel as putting on a victim's bloodstained coat," says the LORD Almighty. "So guard yourself; always remain loyal to your wife." |

well my one question about that is that if God, the Creator of absolutely everything hates divorce so much, and is both omniscient and omnipotent then why did he make it possible for us to choose divorce in the first place?
don't get me wrong, I like the idea of being with one woman only for life, it sounds great in theory, but if it's a mutual agreement between two people that a particular kind of relationship isn't working out then is it truly right to remain in it? |

Considering the contradictory messages in the bible, it surprises me not to see both of these posts together here. The bible is not consistant from one chapter to another. |

In other words, a lot of modern Christains denounce the Bible as the word of God and instead have come to believe that they speak for God. I won't argue with that one bit. On the contrary, I agree with it wholeheartedly! |

In other words, a lot of Christians just make up their religion on the fly, but still cling to the ancient Bible to support their bigotries.
Yep, I think you've nailed it. |

Thats a very good point.God knows how destructive a un godly and un holy woman or man can be in a marriage. He knew that it was possible that this man or woman could become a negative influnce on this person and corrupt his or her soul leading them further away from God instead of closer. The Biblical Reasons For Divorce Adultery: Jesus said, "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery," (Matt. 19:9). The word in Greek for immorality is porneia from which we get the word pornography. Sexual immorality, i.e., adultery, is a grounds for divorce according to Jesus. God also wants us to be married to other Christians and not non Christians. 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NASB) 14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? So in short divorce is allowed for a person cheating or a very immoral person.I also know a person can re-marry if they are widowed. |

It seems to me that any arguments that suggest that no Christian would agree with ancient things in the Bible it truly a seriously lame argument.
That just suggests that even Christians agree that the things written in the Bible are utterly asburd and unwise. But that's the whole arguement of why we shouldn't believe that the book is the word of God in the first place. It truly seems strange that a modern day religion would give anything to be able to distance itself from the very doctrine that it's founded on. "Even we agree that the things in the Bible are absurd. Get over it and join our modern day movement!" Yeah right. |

Like I said if it isn't Gods or Jesus word it can be left up to interpretation. The bible wasn't written till some 20 years after Jesus death so it is probably fair to say that their stories may differ slightly from book to book. Also the language they spoke back then was very complicated and hard to translate. It is this reason why you have so many different versions(such as the king james)of what was said in the bible. |

The bible is not consistant from one chapter to another. At parts, it isn't even consistent from one sentence to another.. True. Religions pick and choose what they want to from it and change the rest in translation to fit what they picked as important. Individuals go even farther and translate it to mean what they think it should say. |

Religions pick and choose what they want to from it and change the rest in translation to fit what they picked as important. Individuals go even farther and translate it to mean what they think it should say. Exactly. And this is precisely why the book is dangerous. Everyone who picks it up thinks that THEY speak for God. That's why we have so many religions and demoninations of religions based on this mythology. No two people even agree on what it says. Even people within congregrations of a single demonination don't agree on everything. When I was a Christian some of my uncles were preachers, and they would often stop over for dinner and many times invite other preachres. These were usually all of the same demonination, or of very similar denominations. After dinner we would all sit around and listen to them discuss their religious topics. Even the preachers were not in agreement with each other. Of course, they disagreed in very polite ways, but disagreed none the less. Clearly the book is useless. |

From what I have read from the previous posts I want to make something crystal clear.Although the bible is up to interpretation that doesn't mean it is wrong in any way shape or form.I believe everything the bible says and do not disagree with anything the bible says.If we were living in those ancient times all those rules and laws you think are crazy today would be perfectly normal and allowed. The point I was trying to make is that we do not live in those times and it really isn't relevant to bring them up because no Christians follows those laws or tradations. It doesn't mean we are being bad Christians or disobeying the law because we are not putting ourselves in that position to begin with.
Instead of worrying about ancient laws and traditions written by holy men thousands of years ago we need to worry and live our lives by what the word of God and Jesus said. That is what is most important. What is most important to God and Jesus is 1.)Loving the lord with all your heart. 2.)The ten commandments. 3.)Fighting evil and stading up for good. 4.)Helping others find the salvation lord. 5.)Reading your bible and learning what God and Jesus taught us. |

"So guard yourself; always remain loyal to your wife." Considering the contradictory messages in the bible, it surprises me not to see both of these posts together here. The bible is not consistant from one chapter to another. That is not what I am referring to. If you read the bible at face value without the reverence that it is a word from a god, it makes almost no sense. |

i asked that someone explain the rationale to me as someone who is genuinely curious, without any sarcasm and attempts at confrontation on my part, yet a christian comes along and makes a post which oozes with both and a whole lot of condescension as well...
but anyhoo, thank you for your response .i'm not trying to debate you, just trying to understand. i'm sorry if my asking questions offends you. further questions though: to ask me to focus on what most christians practise and ignore the actual contradictory teachings of the bible would be asking that i ignore the seeming hypocrisy of biblical arguments against gay marraige. the fact that 999,999 out of a million christians practise something that directly goes against biblical teachings means that you are insinuating that it is ok that you ignore teachings in the bible, if it is ok that you do, what right do you have to demand that others do the opposite? to my feeble brain it seems like a case of "do as i say not as i do" if it is possible that "holy men" wrote something into the bible which is at odds with god's teachings... why is the bible a credible document at all? how do you know which "quotes" from god and jesus are actual quotes and not what "holy men" made up? |

Considering that the bible was totally man created with no assistance from any other source. The chances are good that it has implications of what men of this time wanted or felt were of importance. |
